For someone who’s been in fitness + wellbeing since 2002…
you’d think I’d be motivated and on it all the time, right?
Nope.
When burnout hit, even rolling out my yoga mat felt like a chore.
And don’t get me started on the gym.
I’d write the plans, map the week, promise myself I’d stick to it…
and by Wednesday I was back on the sofa, phone in hand, snacks nearby.
I knew what to do.
But knowing didn’t help when my body was screaming “enough”
and I kept pretending I didn’t hear it.
I told myself I was just being lazy.
That I needed to be more disciplined.
But really, I was exhausted.
It wasn’t about motivation.
It was about pressure and ignoring how burnt out I really was.
I was pretending I had the capacity to keep up with routines
that didn’t actually fit the reality of how I was feeling.
So I let that whole mindset go.
Stopped trying to fix it all at once.
Stopped standing in my own frikkin way.
And I focused on the one thing that actually helped:
Small, doable rituals that built my energy back.
• Gentle movement for 10-15 minutes, more if I felt like it.
•Rest, Sleep & self care habits that didn’t feel like a second job
•Food choices that made me feel better, not guilty
And slowly… I came back to myself.
Now I’m back to lifting 3x a week.
My yoga mat gets more regular visits
And yeah, there are still days I can’t be arsed.
But instead of ghosting the whole thing, I just say,
“Do 10 mins, Debbie. See how you feel.”
These shifts changed everything.
