*** Reminiscing Ruth Perrott Awarded MBE in Queens Honours List***

“Wil you marry me. You have changed my life and I am so grateful”, is just one of the thousands of responses that our very own Ruth Perrott, received on her mission for services to sight impairment in poor African communities.

Because of this vital work, Ruth has been presented with her MBE, awarded in the Queens’ New Year Honours list.

Ruth has visited the African continent sixteen times, providing spectacles to in excess of 20,000 patients in poor rural areas.
Ruth’s work can mean the difference between being able to provide for a family or not.

The project, to deliver spectacles to Africa, is supported by Rotary York Ainsty and began in 1991 with an initial visit to Cameroon in support of Prince Charles’s Operation Raleigh.
Since then, Ruth has visited Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Malawi, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.

Ruth feels extremely lucky that she returned from her most recent mission in 2024. Spectacle libraries are now airfreighted to local charities who provide sight tests, to ensure the specs delivered to each person are optically correct and are the right size and fit.

Ruth Perrott travelled to Windsor Castle on Tuesday December 7 2021 to receive the award from Prince William.

Rotary York Ainsty recently recognised Ruth’s work by making her an Honorary member and presenting her with the Paul Harris Fellowship award.

Ruth specialises in neuro-developmental optometry, assessing and treating children, teens and adults with reading issues, and also patients with mild traumatic brain injury or strokes.

Ruth says “There is no other profession which can improve the quality of life, for the wearer and their family, so quickly as providing a pair of spectacles.”

Hello my name is Ruth Perrott and I have a private Optometry practice in York England where for the past 20 years I have been specialising in working with children who have reading and writing difficulties and people who are experiencing vision problems after a Brain Injury or eye injury, or problems with double vision or lazy eyes.

Our team here is unique and together we are passionate about vision in its broadest sense.

At VisionCare Development we specialise in Vision Therapy, which is a treatment program designed to successfully correct specific visual challenges faced by children and adults.

Our unique, interactive, and hands-on approach to Vision Therapy allows our patients to overcome their visual barriers. We are passionate about helping our patients to find success in all areas of life that are important to them, whether that be in their social, athletic, or academic pursuits. My colleague Fiona Healey is a Post Grad Cert Education and Experienced SENCO teacher having run a school for children with autism she can see what the classroom looks like through the eyes of a child. Fiona is experienced in diagnosing and working with children who may Dyslexia and other learning difficulties.
