Shoulder Pain? Then browse through these slides. Really interesting research just published.

Once again, the gap between MRI findings and pain shown to be quite inconclusive.

What a fantastic day last Thursday when all the Women in Business Finslists got together with the Powerhouse that is for a really informative day.

Did I rock up in runners after getting a sneaky run in while everyone else was dressed up and fabulous? Absolutely.

Did I realise at the end of the day I need a PR manager as I didn't even take one promo pic? Absolutely

Did I sell myself short when we all pitched our businesses, not mentioning all my International experience and vast educational courses I've done, from Masters Degrees to Advanced Practise qualifications and diplomas? Absolutely!

But did I enjoy it? 100%! And my take home messages were

* As my friend Julie puts it, Be More American: put away the guilt of selling yourself!

* Surround yourself with inspirational people and both you and your business will grow.

Carlow has some amazing business women (most of whom are well dressed 😬)

Really worth a read if you suffer from back pain.

This study is small (26 participants) but very interesting.

For years, moving and handling has taught us to lift with a straight (lordotic) back, in order to "protect" it and that a flexed or bent back is a really dangerous position.

In this study from last year, 26 participants were asked to lift in straight, midrange or flexed position. Surface EMG was used to measure how much the muscles were working.

What they found was that a flexed or bent-back posture produced more strength and efficiency in the back muscles.

Although small, this study is really significant, and is actually the most comprehensive to date to explore the influence of back posture on muscle strength and efficiency during lifting.

It just calls into question advise usually given to manual workers who undertake heavy lifting tasks throughout the day.

So a bent back is NOT a bad position to lift in. Like in any strength task, there is absolutely a role for strengthening in that position, so building up to bigger weights slowly is probably important here too, in order to decrease chance of injury.

But maybe next time you go to lift, check in to see are you over-bracing the muscles, and holding your back rodstraight. Maybe you should just try bending more to reduce your back pain?!

Fantastic to see such high quality research emerging from Irish Universities!

This systematic review, where almost 300 participants were reviewed, found exercise to be EQUALLY EFFECTIVE as surgery for improving pain, disability and quality of life for large and massive rotator cuff (shoulder) muscle tears

Going back a mere (!) 20 years ago in College, the message was v much one of caution as to the dangers of strength training in youths, with the hypothesis that it might damage growth plates and stunt growth. Similar to the field of exercise in pregnancy, it is great to see the research evolve and show the opposite: the huge benefits in strength training from a relatively young age.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommend strength training in youths at least 3 times a week. As always, guidance is. key and under a competent, trained professional.

But encourage getting strong!
