📆 April is PMDD awareness month

🩷 PMDD stands for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

💚 PMDD is a much more severe form of PMS

💙 Symptoms occur in the lead up to your period and go away within a day or two of your period starting.

💛 Symptoms include:

Severe depression
Severe anxiety
Suicidal thoughts
Binge eating
Bloating
Weight gain
Enlarged painful breasts
Low energy
Low mood
Increased appetite
Feeling out of control
Panic attacks
Intense rage

🩵 PMDD cannot be diagnosed by a blood, saliva or hormone test. To diagnose PMDD you must track your symptoms over 2-3 menstrual cycles.

💚 PMDD can often be misdiagnosed for other disorders such as; Generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder. In PMDD, symptoms only occur between ovulation and a few days after your period starts. This is why it’s vital to track your symptoms alongside your menstrual cycle.

💛 86% of people with PMDD will have suicidal thoughts. 34% will attempt su***de.

🩷 There are many different treatment options available. However, treatment has to be tailored to an individuals unique set of circumstances. There is no one size fits all. You may not get the right treatment immediately, you may need to try a few different options before you will find one that suits you and gives you relief from your symptoms.

In November of 2022, the communities of Dromcollogher Broadford & Athea received the devastating news that our beloved friend & colleague Carol Liston O’ Connor was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, a life limitingcondition.

Carol, 42, is originally from Athea & has been living in Broadford for the past 15 years. Carol's husband, Liam is a self-
employed plumber & their 5 children (Ellie-Mai (11), Molly (9), Liam-Óg (7), Mikie & Paddy (4) are grappling to come
to terms with the life changing diagnosis of Motor Neuron Disease.

Before Carol’s diagnosis she was a very active member of the community. She was a secondary school teacher in Desmond College (Newcastle West) where she is still held in the highest regard. Carol has given her whole life to working with young people not just in the classroom but also on the GAA Field. She not only has played with Athea ladies Football but she has also held many coaching and official positions in Athea & Dromcollogher Broadford GAA.
Carol, despite her diagnosis & challenges, is currently chairperson of Dromcollogher Broadford Coiste Na nÓg.

About Carol’s disease – MND
MND is the short term for motor neurone disease, which affects the nerves found in the brain and spinal cord,
essentially they help tell your muscles what to do. If you have MND, this means your muscles will weaken, stiffen and waste, which then will affect how you will walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. MND is life-shortening and there is no cure, but there are treatments which try and reduce the impact it has on a person’s daily life, but these treatments are expensive and very often abroad.

For Carol & her family this disease has had an irrevocable impact on their day to day life. Carol now requires 24 hour care & is a wheelchair user. Liam is unable to work full-time & is trying to manage Carol's care & the care of their 5 children. The day to day running of a house and cost of rearing children remains the same. Their mortgage and billsstill have to be paid.

Our Appeal
We are looking for help with raising money to enable Carol to avail of these treatments, to adapt her transport & home. We ask you to consider contributing to this campaign.
A gift from you today will aid Carol in availing of treatments/equipment and support her and her family to
live with MND and enable Carol, Liam and their children to enjoy their time together without financial worries.
Any contribution would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your support.

The weather was exactly like this 25 years ago.
I remember it was a beautiful evening the evening before Jodie was born and her father said we should go to a beer garden for a few drinks. I had a feeling in my belly that something was up so I didn’t. Happy 25th birthday Jodie Alice Jago. I Love you with all my heart 🩷
