There are many misconceptions and myths about depression that can deter people from seeking treatment so we are here to debunk some!
1. Depression is the same as feeling sad - Feeling down or sad and being depressed are two different things. Unlike sadness, it usually doesn’t go away on its own and lasts weeks, months or even years. People with depression also have many other emotions other than feeling sad like anxiety.
2. Depression is only brought on by trauma - A traumatic event does not cause depression, but it may heighten an already existing issue in someone who deals with it.
3. Depression looks and feels the same for everyone - There’s no one-size-fits-all experience for depression. Just because depression looks and feels one way for one person, doesn’t mean it looks and feels the same for everyone.
4. You can just ‘’snap out out it’’ - Depression is beyond a person’s control. Developing depression is not a choice, and, often, mental health treatment is the only way to pull oneself out of it.
5. Depression is all in your head - Depression is a real mental health disorder stemming from biological, emotional and environmental factors. There are many physical symptoms of depression, including disrupted sleeping patterns, fatigue, aches and pains.
6. Depression is a weakness - The only reason depression is viewed as a weakness is because our society has stigmatized the condition. Depression is a condition that has nothing to do with how strong you are.
