Inclusion in action at The Urban Co-op

At The Urban Co-op, inclusion is not just a value we talk about. It is something we actively practise every day. Our community includes volunteers from disability support groups alongside secondary-level students completing work placements, and together they play an important role in the life of The Urban Co-op.

We believe that if you want to be truly inclusive, you have to make space for everyone in the community. That means recognising different abilities, learning styles, confidence levels and strengths, and creating an environment where people feel welcome, supported and valued.

Red Lentil and Sweet Potato Soup is Jacques's Vegan recipe for February.

I was planning on making a vegetable soup, one made from onion, carrot and potato.

Discussing this with my mother, I mentioned something about adding a few red lentils to bulk it up. She replied, “and they are full of protein and why not some sweet potato, they go well together ”.

When talking to my mother, we often discuss food preparations, as we have since I was a little boy, that is how I learnt to cook. Today, she is 92, a staunch vegan and still an avid cook. When she recommends something, I listen.

So, my soup changed to a ‘Lentil and Sweet Potato Soup’.

Enough here to feed 4 people at a sitting.

🏆 We won the Employability Award in Limerick.

And honestly… this one belongs to you!

To everyone who voted for us, thank you.

Without ye, we wouldn’t be here.

At The Urban Co-Op, we’ve always believed that being an inclusive workplace isn’t a bonus, it’s essential!

Creating space, opportunity and respect for everyone in our community matters. And this award shows that it matters to you too.

To our team, our members, and our wider community, thank you for believing in what we do and how we do it 💚

This is what community looks like.

The volume of sweets that is consumed every day is staggering if our fuel forecourts are a measure to go by!

Contamination levels tested do reveal a concerning reality. Excess sugar is one thing but what if our sweet treats are more than that? A slow but sure poison disguised in bright colours?

Arsenic contamination is not unusual. It was used as a pesticide liberally even before DDT and Roundup.
Our soils have borne the load for generations. Sugar cane fields were no exception.

If we truly tested what we consume what would we find?

Florida is a signal that this is a worldwide issue. But are we ready to recognise it?

We live in a toxic world but can make better choices...

is a good start

Mother Earth is Anne's February Topical Commentary

Not many people like January. It is long, busy and quite a chore. What a busy month we have had in January with visitors etc here at the Co-op! Many discussions and plans with the year beginning as The Urban Co-op is a magnet for good intention! It is also though a season of sickness and caring and reverting to the Mother role. The trend is obvious. Fill up with sugar from October to December and pay the price later. Christmas is a time that encourages parties and events. They are exhausting! Pressure to...

Animal fats have been demonised for far too long. But its great to see them being acknowledged for their health benefits now too. Our immune system relies on Vit A and D...among other things!!!

Butter as a health food? I certainly believe!

❤️ Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be roses and clichés.

Originally, it was about connection, community, and shared rituals, and honestly? We prefer that version.

This year, why not celebrate differently?

Cook something together.

Choose local chocolate.

Drizzle Irish honey on warm pancakes.

Pick up something thoughtful from a local producer.

Because love isn’t mass-produced.

It’s chosen!

💚 Support local.
💌 Tag someone that you'd like to see that post.
📌 Save this for your Valentine’s plans.

This month, my favourite product has to be Emergency Honey Pot. I was feeling run down and could feel the start of a cold coming on, so I tried just one teaspoon. Very soon after, I genuinely felt so much better and more like myself again.

Emergency Honey Pot delivers targeted immune support using a concentrated blend of raw Irish honey, vitamin C, propolis and traditional warming botanicals. I shared it with a friend who was feeling really unwell, and after taking it for a few days they noticed a big improvement. A customer also passed some on to a colleague at work, and he found it helped him feel better too. It has been lovely to see how many people have reached for it when they needed a little extra support. Review by Geraldine, Gill & Mark

Stop poisoning ourselves faster than we can heal...

12/02/2026

Just a quick moment where Ger tells us a little of the history here. Started in 2013 where 19 people set up the CLG officially as Limerick Community Grocery. Acting under cooperative principles this buying club has grown from a social experiment to a multi faceted social enterprise that meets a diverse need in the community.
From access to nourishing food, a sustainable food system is emerging as a model for other communities.

A strong wellness and inclusion focus ensures that a well rounded offering is available 7 days for our growing community.

Legislation updates will see a revised Cooperative Act soon. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the community to actively come on board to be part of this enterprise!

Thank you Ger for all your have contributed on this journey!

Our Story

The Urban Co-op is Limerick’s first co-operative grocery store to be owned, controlled and operated by the community. Our aim is to sell wholesome food at affordable prices, providing maximum transparency in the process. We support local farmers, growers, producers and start-ups. We are proud of our relationship with our suppliers, and the quality of their produce. We prioritise sourcing food from organic, sustainable, ethical farming practices and we support local, artisan producers.

We follow the seven co-operative principles, with community and education being of special importance. Our community, our membership, comprises the consumers who shop in the store, the staff and volunteers who work there, and the farmers, bakers, producers and suppliers who feed us. Membership is open to all. We are growing all the time, and we encourage you to join us in building a great community project for a sustainable Limerick, and of course - a great place to shop!
