The Germ in the Dairy Pail by Forrest Maready is Anne's recommended reading for January.

I do love a book about raw milk, and here is the latest one… cannot wait to read it, but here is the review on Amazon!

Once revered as nature's perfect nourishment, milk became public enemy number one as germ theory unleashed collective panic about the invisible world within our food. Forrest Maready uncovers the fascinating, forgotten story of how this fear—epitomised by the notorious "swill milk" scandal—reshaped our food landscape forever.

Significant positive outcomes were seen in longitudinal studies where increased organic intake was associated with reduced incidence of infertility, birth defects, allergic sensitisation, otitis media, pre-eclampsia, metabolic syndrome, high BMI, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

WHY do we make the effort to ensure people have access to organic food?

There are many reasons but we cannot ignore the health effects.!

Invest in your health with organic foods!

Ensuring our most vulnerable members of society have the choice to consume organic food should also be a priority if we are serious about wellbeing.

We hope you enjoy Anne's January Real Food for Living article Dead or Alive

With all the information on food labels it is difficult if not impossible to make decisions on nourishment. We act in faith that the truth is being told to us on the quality of ingredients. So much trust in the food system. Of course there is plenty of regulation and legislation along the way to give us the sense of protection and food “security”

It is difficult to summarise the extent of activities that take place at The Urban Co-op amidst the retail and wellness!

Our strategic plan has a resonance now that is not so much about targets but a depth of connection that we see acts as a springboard for more impact.
How do you measure this?!
We can certainly count numbers but its so much more than that.
We do see how we can inspire action in many ways forward.
Take the Midwest Biodistrict project as an example of how a chance comment we made on a video prompted an idea into action... we love this energy of inspiration!
Fueled by nourishing food, it is gaining traction!!!

We organised Dr Unwin to visit in 2024 and were thrilled to see him again for Biofarm as we knit together the importance of our farmers for our own health & wellbeing.

We gather inspiration and fuel from these positive events and going to Utah to attend the Wise Traditions conference was certainly a bucket filler!!
Sharing knowledge is a privilege and being able to utilise the space at The Urban Co-op to do this is more than rewarding!

Particularly young people who we can enthuse about the potential of social enterprises!

2025 was a year for recognising the potential of The Urban Co-op. Thank you to everyone we connected with this year!

No wonder we now say we are a nourishing environment for conscious change!

We welcome 2026 with gusto!!

2025 has been a busy one! The Urban Co-op is more than the retail and wellness.

We have a strong focus on supporting disability, providing purposeful work and opportunities!
You may notice a theme of nourishing food woven through here too...as a community we recognise that nourishing food is not always a choice available. However it can be available and also under utilised...
We want to focus on this going forward as we develop our kitchen!

Our strategic plan launched this year was part of some innovative and fun projects we worked on.

Themes:

Membership
Education
Networking

We are especially proud to support the return to employ initiative which will develop into an independent social enterprise because we have cultivated and mentored along the way.

The Urban Co-op is growing organically to meet the needs of our growing community. Thank you to all supporting us on this wonderful adventure!
Bring on 2026!

A nourishing environment for conscious change!

Zero Waste for December is Epsom Salts

Epsom salts are one of those simple everyday items that do far more than most people realise. They are inexpensive, easy to store, and completely plastic free when bought in bulk or paper packaging. By choosing a product that works in more than one area of your home, you reduce waste and cut down on unnecessary purchases.

Annes is a big fan of Epsom salts baths for her health routine! Not only does it help to give her the benefits of the magnesium support she doesn’t waste the water afterwards but uses to water the house plants inside and outside in the polytunnel! Wait until it cools down first though!

Our Story

The Urban Co-op is Limerick’s first co-operative grocery store to be owned, controlled and operated by the community. Our aim is to sell wholesome food at affordable prices, providing maximum transparency in the process. We support local farmers, growers, producers and start-ups. We are proud of our relationship with our suppliers, and the quality of their produce. We prioritise sourcing food from organic, sustainable, ethical farming practices and we support local, artisan producers.

We follow the seven co-operative principles, with community and education being of special importance. Our community, our membership, comprises the consumers who shop in the store, the staff and volunteers who work there, and the farmers, bakers, producers and suppliers who feed us. Membership is open to all. We are growing all the time, and we encourage you to join us in building a great community project for a sustainable Limerick, and of course - a great place to shop!
