You Can’t Outrun a Bad Diet

🏃‍♀️ Many people turn to long-distance running to “burn off” calories… but here’s the truth: running is not a magic weight-loss program.

🔥 While endurance training does burn energy, your body quickly adapts. Running longer and harder often just makes you hungrier — and without proper nutrition, it’s easy to eat back (or overeat) what you burned.

🍎 Weight management is far more influenced by overall nutrition than the kilometres you log. You can’t rely on running alone to create a healthy body composition.

💡 Instead, focus on:

Adequate fuelling → Running on empty leads to fatigue, poor recovery, and injury risk.
Balanced nutrition → Prioritise whole foods, protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats.
Smart training → Running builds endurance, strength, and mental resilience—but it’s not the whole equation.

What gear do you use when doing an Ultra Marathon?

Trail Runners: I run in New Balance Hierros mostly. But the type of course will determine the runner..for open mountains I use Inov8 Mudtalons, for shorter races I use Salomon Speedcross.

Clothing: I love the Energetics shorts and tshirts from Intersport Elverys, long shorts, so comfy and don't budge.

Running Bag: Ultimate Direction Race Vesta 6.0. This bag has seen me through so many races. Comfortable, loads of storage and breathable.

Client: What are you training for?
Me: A 100k Ultra in Arizona.
Client: How do you train for that?
Me: Let me tell you.

Monday: Rest Day - I focus on recovery. I go for a Sports Massage every 2 weeks.

Tuesday: 1 hour trail run , usually speed work with Zone 2 running warm up and cool down.

Wednesday: 45 minute easy run followed by 30 minutes in the sauna

Thursday: 1 hour easy trail run followed by strengthening exercises at home.

Friday: Rest Day, I use the recovery boots from Brisk walk for active recovery.

Saturday: Long Trail Run with a sprinkling of speed work. Typically Tempo Intervals of varying times, total run time can be from 90 mins to 5 hours, depending on training cycle.

Sunday: Recovery/Endurance Run depending on how close to race day time can vary from 1-3 hours.
And I finish off my Sunday with an Epsom Salt Bath.
Along with quality sleep, nutrition and hydration I am able to sustain this training load while working my very physical day job as a Sports Massage Therapist.

Running Terms Explained Part 1

PR or PB - Personal Record or Personal Best. Your fastest time in a particular race/distance.

DNF - Did Not Finish. A runner who did not finish the race.

DNS - Did Not Start. A runner who did all the hard work in training but didn't make it to the start line.

DFL - Dead Fxking Last - Finishing in last place in a race.

Pain Cave - the place you go when everything hurts and you're dying.

Blow Up - going out too fast in a race. Doing a 5k PB in a marathon is never a good idea, it never works out.
