Drogheda couple share their fertility story and say “When I think about how far we’ve gotten to today, and how our family of two became a family of three, I think about science, and how I made a baby with science and got magic”
Drogheda couple Emma Kavanagh (35) and Seán Gillivan (33) always suspected having children would be difficult for them, so she was not surprised by her unexplained infertility diagnosis
According to a 2015 study published in the National Library of Medicine, approximately 30pc of infertile couples across the world are diagnosed with unexplained infertility.
This phenomenon is defined by the lack of medical evidence to point to a specific cause for a person’s inability to conceive.
'Before putting any of our own money into treatment, we decided to hold off and see if we could avail of the Government-funded IVF treatment we were hearing whispers about', Emma says.
'We waited patiently and eagerly throughout the summer and the start of autumn. There was ongoing talk about the launch of the new scheme, but it kept getting delayed. We managed to cling on to whatever hope was left in between all the setbacks.
'Then, in September, 2023, the State-funded fertility treatment was officially rolled out.'
