Creative Therapy offers adolescents and adults the opportunity to talk about what is going on for them in a safe, supportive space as well as to use creative media to explore experiences, which may, at times, feel more natural. If you are a parent or adult experiencing difficulties, knowing about Creative Therapy might help. Arch Creative and Play Therapy Centre now also offers Creative Clinical Supervision. Creative Clinical Supervision utilises traditional as well as creative means to support therapeutic practitioners to process, reflect on and facilitate their client work. This may especially suit Play Therapists and other Creative Arts Therapists who frequently work creatively with clients and will find exploration of their clinical work through Art, Clay Work, Sandplay, Drama and Projection particularly important. However, the benefits of Creative Supervision encompass the activation and making-aware of previously unconscious processes and knowledge which can then be integrated into the therapist's own style of working with clients. If you are interested in any of these services, please contact Arch Creative and Play Therapy Centre to discuss details.

Let’s bust a few myths:

❌ “They’re just playing”
✅ Complex processes (neurological, physical and relational) are occurring in playful moments

❌ “Learning does not happen through playing”
✅ Learning through play has important pedagogical functions

❌ “Playing won’t help you if you’re stressed”
✅ Play is a natural stress reliever

❌ “Play Therapy is not evidence-based”
✅ Play Therapy is evidenced-based with substantial empirical research

“Watching your child do things you were not allowed to do as a child can be a major trigger for irritability. No matter how much you have decided to be a gentle parent, when your child starts breaking societal rules that you would not have gotten away with, it can become extremely difficult to cope with your own feelings. Recognizing the root of your frustration is the first step to processing it without letting it overwhelm you.” J. Milburn⁣

Do you find this is an emotional trigger for you? This one can be really tricky to navigate. Sometimes we feel immense joy, freedom and liberation, seeing our child doing things we were not allowed to do, such as climbing on the couch, jumping in puddles, wearing a Batman suit to dinner. Other times we feel filled with a flood of complex emotions and thoughts when our children act in ways that were not accepted when we were children. Examples of this are… “back-talk,” whining, rude tones, crying… even some types of silliness and play can unexpectedly trigger memories of these behaviours being punished, dismissed or suppressed.⁣
