A few days ago, the news that eight healthy babies had been born from a procedure dubbed three-way-IVF or three-person IVF made headlines. This technique has been applied in cases where mitochondrial disease runs in the family of the mother-to-be (in most cases, only the mother’s mitochondrial DNA is passed on).
The removal of the parents’ genetic material from the mother’s egg and subsequent insertion into a donor egg whose genetic material has been removed while leaving the healthy mitochondria in place, leads to a DNA ratio of 99.9% of parental DNA and 0.1% of donor DNA – which will be passed on to subsequent generations.
While the families of the eight healthy babies will be forever grateful for this scientific discovery, ethical questions arise. Also, from a pre- and perinatal perspective, will the additional DNA play a role in the make-up of a person?
