Anne's October Real Food for Living is out now!

The theme of Real Food keeps coming up for us. Our efforts to secure real food to nourish ourselves are being challenged in many ways in these times. Despite apparently the abundance of produce available with multiple supermarkets and convenience stores in reach of most of us the grim reality is we are drowning in the toxicity of ultra-processed products which continue to displace opportunities to nourish and build our bodies, our families, and communities.

Live online-talk with Jon Kabat-Zinn | 4. May 2022 - Not long ago, meditation was a fringe practice and mindfulness a concept that few outside spiritual circles were familiar with. Today it has become a normal and cherished part of modern life. Few people have done more to facilitate this shift than Jon Kabat-Zinn. His mindfulness-based stress reduction programme, now a staple of mental health interventions, brought mindfulness practices into the fold of western science and medicine. To this day, he keeps inspiring people around the world to discover the gifts of mindfulness.

In this deep talk with Jon Kabat-Zinn, we will discuss the following questions while staying attuned to whatever emerges in the present moment:

- What is the place of mindfulness in modern life?
- What is the current scientific understanding of the benefits of meditation?
- How should we relate to spiritual traditions such as Buddhism, and is there a spiritual dimension to mindfulness?
- Is there a danger in the way that mindfulness has become an industry ("McMindfulness")?
- What are Jon Kabat-Zinn's reflections on his personal journey?

The event will be held in English.

I did David's training On becoming trauma sensitive last year, it was wonderful and look forward to his next training in Cork in June. Well done and thank you John Cummins on bringing David to Cork🙏 I highly recommend David's work

Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness (TSM) encourages people to find practices that support self-regulation when they’re overwhelmed in meditation practice. One simple example is making regulating physical contact with the self, which has been shown to reduce cortisol responses to stress (see Dreisoerner et al, 2021, as an example).

I honestly thought soothing self-touch was a pretty cheesy practice when I was first introduced to it, but I’ve come to see the physiological benefits of it as well as effects of enhanced self-compassion.

In the above example, you could try making physical contact with the heart (e.g., hand on heart and/or belly) and also an example of a hand at the base of the skull which can be a surprisingly powerful practice around reassurance and presence.

These practices aren’t to try and avoid discomfort or promote avoidance, but to help people stay with practice when they’re out of their window of tolerance. As we talk about a lot in this work, people struggling with trauma often need additional tools to help gain the full benefits of meditation practice.

Jack Kornfield 🙏

The key to wise thought is to sense the energy state behind the thought. If we pay attention, we will notice that certain thoughts are produced by fear and the small sense of self. With them will be clinging, rigidity, unworthiness, defensiveness, aggression, or . We can sense their effect on the heart and the body. When we notice this suffering we can start to relax, breathe, loosen the identification. With this awareness the mind will become more open and malleable. With this pause we return to our Buddha nature. Now we can think, imagine, and plan, but from a state of ease and benevolence. https://jackkornfield.com/the-key-to-wise-thought/

Aaaah yes.....exhale moment! Thank you Jack🙏

The judging mind often represents all the critical, disappointed voices from our childhood. If we fight it—“I shouldn’t be judging. I’m too harsh”—we only add more judging. When the judging mind appears, we can simply acknowledge it with an inward bow and say, “Ah, yes, the judging mind.” As soon as we do, the judging thought often loses its power over us. We can even say, “Thank you for your opinion.”

I noticed this swan on the river Shannon the other day, SITTING STILL, YET at the same time, she appeared to have LOT'S GOING ON UNDERNEATH , as you can see only from the RIPPLE EFFECT in the water around her. It reminded me of SITTING MEDITATION PRACTICE and it's ripple effect in our lives and in those around us😊 This evening in Week 7 of the MBSR programme we will come together to share the ripple effect of our Silent Day Retreat last Saturday, looking forward to it and to seeing you all later 🙏🌷
