Dr Mehta's started as Mehta Nursing Home, a vision of a husband and wife, Dr A.J. Mehta, after completing his studies at Stanley Medical College, began the practice of General Medicine in Sowcarpet, in the Heart of Chennai. Mehta, a student of Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) specialized in Gynaecology and worked for over 10 years with some of the leading European doctors within the Government Hospital in Chennai. Not satisfied with dubious levels of cleanliness in many of the maternity homes, and true believers in safe delivery of children and their follow up care, Drs Mehta started off with a delivery room and two convalescence rooms in the new and today's current hospital location in Chetpet. Location played a part in their expanding practice and nursing home. They were on call 24 X 7. Being on site was a major bonus for patient care. Mehta was one of the first Gujarati family-doctors in the South. A family physician in the truest sense: She undertook the care of both the parents and children throughout their lives. Mehta has helped families give birth to over 10,000 new generations throughout her distinguished medical career. Following the footsteps of Dr Mehta's, their daughter Dr Usha Shukla joined in the family practice and the hospital in 1977. Dr Shukla had practiced extensively in North and South India, at many reputed institutes, including, Sheth Hospital, The Akhil Hind Family Welfare Center, the Government Hospital, and was also a Professor at the MP Shah Medical College in Gujarat. She has always been interested in public health and is still ensuring that her patients are well informed and understand the treatment in order to make informed lifestyle and health decisions. In the early 1990s Dr S.A. Mehta's son - Mr Dilip Mehta took over the administration of the hospital. Mr Dilip Mehta, an alumnus of Loyola College had run companies in pharmaceuticals, food manufacturing, distribution and trading in India and abroad. With his guidance and with a team of exceptional doctors and surgeons (like Professor Dr Ahmed Ali, Professor Dr A.N. Parthasarathy, Professor Latha and many other stalwarts) the institution has transformed into the leading tertiary care hospitals in South India, with over 200 beds. Under the leadership of Dr R Shanmugasundaram (Renowned neonatologist and paediatrician) and with the aid of prominent pediatricians, Dr Mehta's introduced Mehta Children's Hospitals. More recently, the institution has focused on bringing in Modern Healthcare and Customer practices with the support of a strong team of Medical doctors, Surgeons, Super-specialists and experienced leaders. Dr Mehta's grandson, Mr Sameer Mehta, a highly qualified leader who has worked in leading multi-national and global organizations like McKinsey & Company, Shell International and Atlas Advisory across Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia joined the institution in 2007 to help bring the family-friendly medical and advanced surgical healthcare practices to Chennai.
