John Nash, “a mathematical genius”, was awarded the prize in economic sciences for his work on game theory – in particular developing the Nash equilibrium.

Nash had a complicated life. His brilliant doctoral thesis outlining his prize-awarded work was completed by the time he was 21. However around 30 he began struggling with his mental health and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. His experiences living with the illness were famously depicted in the film ‘A Beautiful Mind’, although it was only loosely based on his life.

When he was awarded the 1994 prize in economic sciences Nash was in good health, but without a job and not well-recognised for his work. The award brought his contributions to light and in his own words “transformed his life.”

⭐ On the cover of the latest issue: Tetranuclear Cu(I)–pyrazolate macrocycles can produce solid-state emissions at yellow, green, or deep-blue wavelengths by virtue of a remote steric effect. The conformational behavior of substituents on the pyrazole ligands can impose a rigidochromic effect on the copper core, whose phosphorescence is mediated primarily through a cluster-centered triplet state.

that blood groups were discovered 121 years ago?

When a person loses lots of blood through accident or illness, it must be replaced. When transfusions from one person to another were tried, however, the result was very often disastrous.

Medicine laureate Karl Landsteiner discovered why: when different people's blood was mixed, the blood cells sometimes clotted. He explained in 1901 that people have different types of blood cells, that is, there are different blood groups. The discovery led to blood transfusions between people with compatible blood groups.
