As we reflect on the impact of colonialism on African borders, it's important to acknowledge the detrimental effects that still linger to this day. The improper design of colonial borders has led to various issues, including borderland conflicts and the marginalization of certain communities.

The Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 was a key event that saw European powers carve up Africa with little regard for the continent's cultural and ethnic boundaries. The result was a hodgepodge of artificial borders that grouped together disparate groups of people and ignored traditional trade and migration routes.

The arbitrary borders have caused much pain and conflict in African communities, including the Banyarwanda, who were split between Rwanda and Congo. Additionally, the colonial borders have led to a dependence on colonial languages and governance structures, resulting in the suppression of indigenous languages and cultures.

But all hope is not lost. African leaders have recognized the importance of border governance and are working towards creating better border policies. The African Union has developed a Border Governance Strategy that aims to promote regional integration and the free movement of people and goods.

As we continue to strive towards a better future for Africa, let's remember the impact of colonialism on our borders and work towards creating more inclusive and effective border policies. Nourishing the soul means feeding it in all the ways that bring us joy and balance. It's about building connections with loved ones, taking time for rest and rejuvenation, and giving ourselves the mental and physical nourishment we need to thrive.

When we prioritize our soul food - the experiences and relationships that bring us happiness and fulfillment - we are able to create bonds that deepen our sense of purpose and belonging. And when we prioritize rest, whether through sleep or simply slowing down, we allow our bodies to recharge and renew.

But our journey towards wellness doesn't stop there. Feeling stressed out? Incorporating certain herbs into your daily routine can help combat anxiety and promote relaxation. According to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (1), ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has been shown to significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels. Another study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology (2) found that passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) can be an effective treatment for generalized anxiety disorder. A systematic review published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (3) found that lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil can be effective in reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality.
Here are some simple and easy herbal recipes that you can make at home with these herbs:

Ashwagandha Tea:
Take 1 tsp of ashwagandha powder
Add it to a cup of hot water
Let it steep for 5-10 minutes
Strain and enjoy
Passionflower Tincture:

Treating a whole generation with herb ๐ŸŒฟ

Last year, the proportion of adults 65 or older who reported recent cannabis use jumped by 18 percent, according to the 2020 National Survey of Drug Use and Health released last week, rising from 5.1 percent in 2019 to 6 percent in 2020.

The spike comes on the heels of a steady trend of increased cannabis use among seniors over the last five years.

Whatโ€™s more, in 2020, more older adults also reported using ma*****na sometime in their lifetime โ€” a jump from roughly 32 percent to 36 percent โ€” signaling a possible cultural shift in older adultsโ€™ willingness to open up about past tokes.
