South Taranaki Funeral Services Our professional, qualified and experienced team provide full funeral services, when you need us most

Part of the Hawera community since 1926, Cleggs Funeral Services started out as McCormick’s Funeral Services and was operated by Davy McCormick until his death. Michael Clegg purchased the funeral home in 1978 and in 1980 McCormick’s became the now well known Cleggs Funerals & Monuments. Michael Clegg operated Cleggs until his retirement in 2013. Glenn Rogers came into the business as a funeral di

rector in 2014 and in 2021 became the new owner. He is your first point of contact and remains a dedicated servant to the South Taranaki community. Glenn is humbled to be able to support your family when you need us most. Located in central Hawera on High Street, South Taranaki Funeral Services are able to offer a range of funeral services for our families. We have a large, modern chapel and a very comfortable reception lounge which can provide full catering services. For the ones we carry with us, always.

A song, a breeze, the evening sky,
a whispered thought, a gentle sigh,
the smallest things can still shine through
and quietly remind me of you.

What does life as a funeral director really look like?

We recently sat down with Frankly Friday host Tracey Blake for a heartfelt conversation about the role, the realities, and the privilege of supporting families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

This podcast offers an honest and thoughtful insight into the life of a funeral director and the care that goes into supporting families behind the scenes.

For some, pre-planning is often about the people we love.

Many people choose to record their wishes simply to make things easier for their family when the time comes.

Having guidance around things like the type of service, music, or personal touches can take away uncertainty and allow families to focus on remembering and celebrating a life.

For some, it becomes a final gesture of care. A quiet way of looking after the people who matter most.

If you would like to learn more about pre-planning, the team at South Taranaki Funeral Services is always available for a quiet, no-pressure conversation.

We are looking forward to being part of the Egmont A&P Show this year.

Community events like this mean a great deal to us. They give us the opportunity to connect in a relaxed setting, have genuine conversations, and simply be available if people have questions. Sometimes just having a conversation can take the pressure out of what can feel like a difficult topic.

We will have a selection of our monumentals on display, along with special monumental pricing available across the weekend. Our team will be there to answer any funeral-related questions you may have, whether you are planning ahead, supporting a loved one, or simply wanting to better understand your options.

You will also be able to view our classic hearse on display, a vehicle that reflects the tradition, care and attention we bring to every service.

If you are heading along to the show, please come and say hello. Even if it is just for a quick chat. We would love to see you there.

Basic Cremation – Frequently Asked Questions

When someone dies, not every family wants or needs a formal funeral. A basic cremation can be the right choice for many, and it’s okay to ask questions.

✨Does a basic cremation mean less care?
No. Your loved one is cared for with the same dignity, respect and professionalism as any other service. The difference is simply that there is no formal funeral or gathering.

✨Is there a service or viewing?
A basic cremation does not include a service. It’s a private process, allowing families to grieve quietly or plan a memorial later if they wish; however, a basic cremation can include a viewing if the family desires. Please feel free to discuss any personalisation requests with one of our dedicated team.

✨Can we still have a memorial later on?
Yes. Many families choose to hold a remembrance at a later date, in their own time and in a way that feels right for them and their whānau.

✨Is this option chosen for cultural or personal reasons?
Often, yes. Some families prefer simplicity, privacy, or have loved ones who expressed clear wishes. Others live out of town or want to reduce stress during an already difficult time.

✨Is it okay to choose this even if others might expect a funeral?
Absolutely. There is no right or wrong way to say goodbye. What matters most is choosing what feels right for your family.

✨Will someone talk us through the process?
Our experienced and qualified staff are here to guide our families every step of the way, we are here to walk beside you and guide you through this journey. This is our commitment to you.

At South Taranaki Funeral Services, we’re here to support families with care, clarity and understanding, whatever option they choose.

For some families, a simple cremation without a formal service feels right.

It can allow space to grieve privately, or to plan a memorial at a later time that suits your whānau.

At South Taranaki Funeral Services, a basic cremation still includes the same care, respect and professionalism, just without the formal gathering.
