You can’t withdraw from an account you’ve never invested in.

But here’s the beautiful thing - in community work, the investment isn’t money.

It’s:
Presence.
Generosity.
Collaboration.
Mana-enhancing referrals.
Celebrating each other publicly.

At our Youth Hauora Network hui yesterday, we explored how we strengthen our “emotional bank account” as a sector - so when funding gets tight, when caseloads are heavy, when burnout creeps in… we’re not alone.

Because good neighbours don’t keep score.
They keep showing up.

Some recent “deposits” we’ve seen in the HBC Youth Hauora Network 💛

• A last-minute referral that meant a young person didn’t fall through the cracks
• An organisation writing a grant reference for another
• Sharing a venue without charging
• Amplifying each other’s posts and programmes
• Picking up the phone instead of saying “not our scope”

These aren’t transactions.
They’re trust in action.

When we consistently show up for each other, we build something stronger than individual services - we build a safety net.

Let’s talk about how we grow that net together at our upcoming hui.

What if our community had a shared emotional bank account?
Not the kind where we keep score.
Not the kind where support is transactional.

But the kind where every:
🤝 introduction
📣 social media share
🧠 piece of advice
☕ coffee catch-up
💛 “How are you really doing?”
…is a deposit.

In the youth hauora space, we don’t work in isolation.
When one organisation is strong, our rangatahi are stronger.

Over summer we heard some beautiful stories of organisations referring to each other, collaborating quietly, showing up for each other behind the scenes.

That’s not networking.
That’s community wealth.

This hui, we’re diving into this idea - how we build our collective capacity so when one of us needs support, the answer is “Of course.”

YOUTH HAUORA NETWORK – INTRO FROM YOUR NEW COMMUNITY CONNECTOR

Kia ora e te whānau (hello community),

I’m excited and humbled to step into the role of Community Connector for the Youth Hauora Network.

First, a big mihi to Liv (Olivia Huszak oliviahuszak). The mahi she’s done over the last 2 years has been incredible — I definitely have big shoes to fill. She’s helped build a network that’s full of heart, collaboration and real impact for our rangatahi (young people).

For anyone new here, the Youth Hauora Network brings together 125+ local organisations, schools, youth workers, health providers and community legends who all support youth wellbeing across the Hibiscus Coast.

My role is simple:
Connect our people. Celebrate your mahi. Share your stories. Help get your services in front of the right whānau. Be a cheerleader for everything you’re already doing so well.

This network isn’t about one person — it’s about all of us.
And as we know… “It takes a village to raise a child.”
This is our village.

You’ll see me around the community, visiting organisations, helping spread the word about your events, holding space at hui, and keeping the wairua (energy) strong across the network.

If you want to connect, collaborate, share an event, promote an opportunity, or just have a kōrero (chat) — I’m here.

Ngā mihi nui (big thanks) for the warm welcome into this kaupapa, and special aroha to Liv for everything she’s built.
Let’s keep uplifting our rangatahi together. 🌊💛
