1 in 9 Singapore residents aged 18 to 69 years old has diabetes. It creates a significant disease burden due to its chronic nature and associated complications which include diabetic retinopathy, kidney disease and heart disease.

Up to one third of diabetic patients will develop diabetic retinopathy - an eye condition where the vessels at the back of the eyeball become leaky. This can lead to swelling and bleeding in the eye. Of these cases, 8.9% of them are sight threatening.

Lunchtime lecture today, sharing about the eyelid cancer cases that I have managed in my career. It is true that I learn the most when I prepare a lecture and apply the surgical principles on my patients. I have given this lecture about five times to residents, general practitioners and fellow ophthalmologists. I still learn something new with every round of preparation!
