Better out than in, especially when it comes to sneezing. 🤧

This is because when you stifle a sneeze, the force of the expulsion is redirected, causing pressure in your head and respiratory system to skyrocket. This can lead to painful ear damage, ruptured blood vessels or even injuries to your throat and sinuses.

Sneezing is a natural reflex to expel irritants from your nasal passages so it is best to let it out safely into a tissue or the crook of your elbow to minimise the spread of germs.

Notice how the fresh aroma of coffee or your favourite perfume no longer pops like before? You are probably experiencing an age-related decline in the sense of smell.

Known as presbyosmia, it is a common condition that happens when the receptors in our nose that detect scents start wearing down with age. While some decline is normal, a sudden or severe drop in your ability to smell could signal underlying nasal or sinus issues that need attention.

To better identify what is behind changes in your sense of smell, speak to our ENT experts:

People with hearing loss are at a higher risk of developing depression.

This is due to the challenges hearing loss presents in communication, social interaction and overall quality of life. Yet, mental health concerns in individuals with hearing loss often go unaddressed, especially when the hearing condition itself remains untreated.

Here, Dr. Tay Ze Yun takes a moment to tackle common concerns about hearing loss and its impact on emotional well-being, and why early intervention matters.

When the food tastes bland and scents seem to vanish after a cold. Sounds familiar?

Losing your sense of smell after a viral infection like the common cold is surprisingly common, and it is often linked to your olfactory nerve. This nerve, which helps you detect and process smells, can become inflamed or temporarily damaged by the virus, dulling or completely erasing your sense of smell.

This disruption may take weeks or months to recover from. Prolonged cases may require medical intervention. Our ENT specialists are here to help restore your sense of smell:

Ever wondered what is going on inside your ear? An otoscopy can give you a closer look! 👂🔍

This simple, non-invasive procedure allows an ENT specialist to examine your ear canal and eardrum using an otoscope. It helps detect conditions like ear infections, wax buildup, eardrum injuries or even early signs of hearing disorders.

So if you are currently experiencing ear pain, hearing changes or a strange sensation in your ear, it may be time to schedule an otoscopy with us:

Every takeoff, landing or deep dive puts your ears to the test. ✈️🥽

Your Eustachian tubes are designed to equalise pressure between your middle ear and the outside environment. However, when you are soaring through the skies or exploring the deep blues, these tubes will work hard to adjust to the rapid pressure changes.

Constant exposure to these changes will only strain your ear further, leading to pain, clogged sensations, popping or even barotrauma.

Don’t let pressure ruin your adventures. Book a consultation with us to safeguard your ears today:

Is your nose bleeding more often lately? The air might be to blame. 👃🩸

Whether you are living in a dry climate or braving colder seasons, the low humidity levels can dry out the nasal passages. This can cause the delicate lining of the nose to rupture, leaving blood trickling out of your nose. While it is an alarming sight, most nosebleeds are harmless and can be easily treated at home.

However, should the bleeding be excessive and last longer than 20 minutes, seek medical attention with us:

For most of us, clearing our throat on occasion is something we do without thinking.

Therefore, it is easy to dismiss it as a harmless habit. But when it becomes frequent or persistent, it is often your body’s way of signaling that something is off. Common culprits include postnasal drip, acid reflux (GERD), allergies and asthma.

Over time, repeatedly forcing your throat to clear can irritate your vocal cords, damage the lining of your throat and make the sensation worse.

Find yourself clearing your throat constantly? Let us help you get to the root of it:

Gasping for air…but for some reason, your inhaler is not doing the trick? You might be dealing with more than just asthma.

Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) is often mistaken for asthma because the symptoms can feel almost identical — shortness of breath, wheezing and tightness in the chest. As a result, many people are misdiagnosed or treated for the wrong condition which delays proper care and relief.

Take a moment to learn the key differences between the two conditions. And if this sounds like something you or someone you know is experiencing, share this post with them.

If you are ever unsure what is behind your breathing issue, get some clarity from our ENT specialists today:
