Our hands are remarkable instruments, enabling us to grasp, create, and connect with the world around us. The thumb alone is responsible for about 40–50% of hand function. But what happens when the simple act of gripping a pen, turning a key, or opening a jar becomes an excruciating ordeal because of basal thumb arthritis?

Basal thumb arthritis where the cartilage wears down, is an often under-recognised condition that silently affects millions worldwide. From its causes to the debilitating symptoms, the journey through this condition can be both perplexing and distressing.

Thumb joint replacement—also known as thumb arthroplasty—is a surgical procedure used to treat severe arthritis or joint damage at the base of the thumb, typically in the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. Choosing thumb joint replacement is often about restoring quality of life when non-surgical treatments like medications, splints, or injections fail to relieve pain or restore function.

Do not let thumb pain hold you back. If you think you are suffering from basal thumb arthritis, seek treatment as early as possible so you can go back to doing the things you love.

If you are ever in doubt, do not hesitate to reach out to our hand surgeon, Dr Jacqueline Tan. She is committed to providing exceptional care and guidance throughout your recovery journey.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway in the wrist. This compression can lead to characteristic symptoms affecting the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger. Patients suffering from CTS typically present with tingling and numbness in most, if not all, of the fingers except for the pinky.

Identifying symptoms early can prompt timely medical evaluation and reduce the risk of long-term nerve damage that affect daily function.

Certain activities and positions commonly worsen carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. These include repetitive hand movements, prolonged gripping or sleeping position.

Alternatively, you can consult Dr Jacqueline Tan, our friendly hand specialist, to learn more about the available treatment options if you are experiencing persistent numbness, tingling or weakness in your thumb, index, middle or ring finger. This is especially important if symptoms begin to affect your grip, hand coordination or daily tasks.

The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that connects the spinal cord to the shoulders, arms, and hands. These nerves control both movement and sensation in the upper limbs. A brachial plexus injury occurs when these nerves are stretched, compressed, or torn due to trauma, repetitive strain, or complications during childbirth.

The severity of the injury varies. Mild injuries, such as temporary stretching of the nerves, may heal on their own. However, severe injuries, like nerve ruptures or detachment from the spinal cord, often require surgical intervention.

For a proper diagnosis of the cause of the injury, the doctor will need to do a physical examination of the affected arm and hand. They may recommend further nerve and muscle function tests. MRI or CT myelography may also be performed for better treatment planning.

Based on the condition of the injury, the doctor will be able to recommend either non-surgical or surgical treatment for the patient to undergo.

Welcoming a precious new bundle of joy into your life is undeniably a magical experience. However, amidst the joyous moments, you may encounter unexpected challenges, such as “mummy’s wrist,” a condition stemming from the repetitive motions involved in caring for your little one.

"Mummy's wrist" is a colloquial term for a condition known as De Quervain's tenosynovitis. It commonly affects new parents, particularly mothers, who frequently lift and carry their babies. The condition involves inflammation of the tendons in the wrist that control thumb movement, leading to pain on the thumb side of the wrist.

There are some relief strategies to ease the pain and allow you to navigate this period with renewed ease and joy.
1. Rest and Modify Activities
2. Use of wrist splint
3. Seek professional help

Mummy’s wrist may pose challenges, but with the right approach, you can ease pain and discomfort, allowing you to fully enjoy every moment of your beautiful journey into motherhood.

Visit https://www.advancedhand.com.sg/3-ways-to-ease-the-pain-of-mummys-wrist/ to find out more.

Alternatively, you can consult Dr Jacqueline Tan, our friendly hand specialist, to learn more about the available treatment options.
