Degenerative disc disease is technically not a disease; but rather, refers to the wearing down of oneโs spinal discs as we age.
Factors that cause the discs to degenerate include: the drying out of the (once firm and rubbery) discs, injuries, as well as tears in the outer portion of the disc from daily activities and sports.
The pain is most commonly felt in the lower back and neck; tends to come and go and range between mild to severe; worsens while sitting or bending; and may cause numbness or weakness in the extremities.
