Overuse injuries to the muscles and joints can occur due to repetitive motion and improper techniques.

Signs and symptoms include: numbness, swelling and gradual inability to move the affected area as you once could.

How can we prevent this?
* Condition and pace yourself; take breaks
* Ensure you have proper form and gear
* Warm up before embarking on the activity
* Gradually increase its intensity and duration

If an overuse injury is suspected, see a doctor immediately and allow your body ample rest. Your doctor should clear you for activity once healed.

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that affects the heel, often linked to overuse, long periods of standing or tight calves.

It occurs when the plantar fascia, the ligament that supports your arch, becomes irritated or inflamed. This leads to sharp heel pain, especially with your first steps in the morning.

If heel pain is affecting your daily activities, do reach out to our orthopaedic specialist for an evaluation.

Stress fractures, which are small cracks in the bone, occur when there is repetitive force exerted on the bones of the feet or ankles, and the muscles are unable to adequately cushion the impact.

Fortunately, stress fractures generally heal on their own with simple measures, such as ample rest of the injured area while it heals over 6-8 weeks.

In some cases, however, surgery may be needed to help the fracture heal properly.

An accredited orthopaedic specialist will be best suited to provide you personalised treatment advice.β€¨πŸ“ž 6475 7177 / 9631 7637 (Call or WhatsApp)

Is it safe to have both knees replaced in one surgery?
The short answer is yes, but not for everyone.

Bilateral knee replacement is considered when both knees are severely damaged and affecting quality of life.

Having both replaced at once means fewer hospital visits and one recovery period. For some, however, it may carry higher risks. The decision depends on your overall health, lifestyle, and how well your body can handle the surgery and recovery, guided by your surgeon’s advice.

Meniscus injury is a common sports injury that athletes are prone to getting, particularly those in contact sports.

Treatments for milder cases include:
* Resting and protecting the injured knee
* Reducing pain and swelling with medications and/or a cold pack
* Physiotherapy to facilitate healing and strengthening of the knee

In more serious cases, surgery may be needed to remove or repair a torn meniscus for optimal recovery.

One telltale sign of a hand injury is a tingling and numb sensation in the palm or fingers.

To prevent the occurrence of such injuries while cycling, take note of the following:

1. Observe your grip on the handlebars - it should be firm yet relaxed.
2. Change hand positions periodically.
3. Keep the wrist straight while cycling.
4. Wear padded gloves or handlebar tape to minimise pressure.
