Research progresses because of people. 👨🏻‍🔬👩🏼‍🔬

During his visit to London, Moses also connected with the experts and lab teams behind the Brain bank at , from our former director, to the technicians and researchers who carry out the careful, day-to-day work of brain tissue dissection and processing. Though we work in different labs across the world, we share the same goal: advancing our understanding of the human brain and seeking better treatments for brain diseases through research.🧠🌍🧬

Follow along to meet the team behind Brain Bank UK, and check out our previous post to see the places Moses explored during this London learning exchange! 🇬🇧

Our research associate Moses recently travelled to London for a learning exchange with the Imperial College London Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Tissue Bank. 🇸🇬 X 🇬🇧🧠

Our team follows internationally recognised protocols, similar to those used at Imperial’s tissue bank, for preserving and storing brain tissue in Singapore. Visiting the lab in person gave Moses the opportunity to see these processes firsthand and deepen his understanding of the standards that ensure high-quality tissue for research.

This is the first post in a three-part series documenting his learning journey. Follow along for more from his London visit! 💂🏻‍♀️✈️🔬

Is this normal ageing or a sign of dementia? 🤔🧠

This is one of the many important questions explored in our brain health talks with (DSG) . Together, we engage seniors from active ageing centres across the country in meaningful conversations about building dementia-friendly communities and the role of brain donation in advancing research towards better treatments. We’re grateful for our continued partnership with DSG.

Organisations interested in collaborating on future brain health talks are welcome to connect with us for more information. 💡

Brain donation plays a vital role in advancing research and improving treatments for brain conditions. While this may be an unfamiliar topic to many, we're glad that many in the community, including seniors, find our talks eye-opening and meaningful.💬👀🎤

We’re grateful to partners like for working with us to deliver brain health talks across active ageing centres. Together, we hope brain tissue donation will lead to a deeper understanding of stroke and better care in the future. 🧠

Do read this sobering and insightful article to better understand how donating one's brain for research can transform "tragedy into hope for others".

Some forms of dementia can strike at an astonishingly young age and move frighteningly fast, and we still don’t fully understand why, says this neuroscientist.

10 runners. What unites them all? 🧠🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

On the first weekend of December, 10 of our pledged brain donors took on the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon events. They ran everything from 5km to the full 42.195km, donning our "Proud Brain Donor" sashes at different points.

This run also marks a milestone: 500 brain donors registered this year. 💜🧡💙
Each pledge reflects Singapore's growing commitment to advancing brain research, helping drive better understanding and future treatments for neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Thank you to our incredible donor-runners for going the distance and raising awareness every step of the way.
✨ Stay tuned for upcoming posts featuring our donor-runners.

With special thanks to for sponsoring race slots for our pledged brain donors.

It’s 27 November, our 6th anniversary! 💜🧡🩵 Today, we celebrate all our pledged brain donors, the heart (and brain) of our work.

Let’s take a little journey through time with seven donor stories, one from each year since we were set up in 2019. While we are not able to showcase all 500+ donors, each one of you is deeply appreciated.

About Brain Bank Singapore

Brain Bank Singapore is a partnership between Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, National Neuroscience Institute, and National Healthcare Group. The centre, which was officially launched on 27th November 2019, has been set up to provide a national resource of post-mortem brain and spinal cord tissues for vital research into disorders affecting the human brain. Together with our community partners and various hospitals, we educate the community and raise awareness of the need for brain tissues for important clinical research, from both healthy individuals as well as patients with neurological conditions. Tissue donations are vital to increase medical knowledge to better diagnose, prevent, treat, and cure conditions that affect the brain. The health and hopes of future generations rest on the discoveries that will be made possible by tissue donation!
