⚽ It usually happens in a split second.

You turn quickly to chase the ball.
Your body twists, but your footing isn’t stable.

That one movement can place sudden stress on your spine.

In football, these moments are common — but if pain lingers after the game, or starts travelling down the leg, it may be more than just a simple strain.

Not every back pain is the same.
Some signs should not be ignored.

Stay sharp on the pitch — and protect your spine off it.

For many elderly individuals, a fall that looks "minor" can cause a serious fracture, especially in the spine.
But why does this happen so easily?

Here’s why spinal compression fractures are more common in older adults:
✅ Osteoporosis: Aging bones lose density and become brittle
✅ Weaker core and balance: Increases fall risk, even during daily activities
✅ Age-related spinal wear: Discs shrink, joints stiffen as the spine becomes less shock-absorbent
✅ Simple movements can trigger it: Sneezing, lifting groceries, or stepping off a curb
✅ Reflexes slow with age: So even if someone slips, they can’t “catch themselves” in time

✨ The more we understand these silent risks, the better we can protect our parents, grandparents, and loved ones.

In our next post, we’ll share the gentle signs to watch for that could signal a spinal fracture even if they never complain of a fall.

Exercise should strengthen your back — not set you back. Sometimes well-intended movements can lead to spine-related issues when the spine is strained, overloaded or repeatedly stressed. ⚠️

What often causes these injuries:
🔹 Repetitive strain during high-impact or high-volume training
🔹 Poor lifting mechanics or sudden increases in load
🔹 Weak core or stabilising muscles placing excess stress on the spine

Warning signs to watch for:
❗ Pain that is sharp, persistent or spreading down the arms or legs
❗ Numbness, tingling, weakness or changes in balance
❗ Loss of bladder or bowel control requires urgent attention

Early assessment helps identify the underlying cause and supports a safe, structured recovery plan.

Dr Colum Nolan was honoured to be invited as a speaker at the recent webinar, Current Clinical Updates in Neurology & Neurosurgery, organised by Doctor Anywhere Indonesia and RSUP Dr Sitranala Tangerang.
During the session, he shared contemporary perspectives on the management of cervical radiculopathy and cervical myelopathy, alongside clinical case discussions that explored decision-making pathways and patient outcomes.
The webinar gathered close to 100 medical practitioners across the region and concluded with an engaging exchange on shared clinical challenges, including delayed neurosurgical referral and common misconceptions in back pain management.
Opportunities like these strengthen regional collaboration and elevate conversations around timely diagnosis, appropriate intervention and evidence-based care.
Grateful for the continued exchange of knowledge across borders.

BACK WITH STRONG START 💪
Your spine is the backbone of everything you do — and a strong, healthy back starts with daily movement. 🧍‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Low-impact exercises like gentle walking, swimming 🏊‍♂️, calming yoga 🧘‍♀️, and core-strengthening routines help support posture, reduce strain, and keep your back pain-free. These habits aren’t just good for today — they build long-term spine resilience. ✨

Start small. Stay consistent. Feel stronger.

A diagnosis of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) doesn’t mean your journey ends.
It means it’s time for a new game plan — one built around hope, expertise, and action. 🛡️🌟

Here’s how people living with FBSS take back control:

✅ Move: Engage in guided physiotherapy to strengthen your body safely and protect your spine
✅ Manage: Use smart pain relief strategies — from medications to targeted nerve injections
✅ Reset: Advanced therapies like spinal cord stimulation can reprogram how your nerves handle pain
✅ Support: Healing isn’t just physical — psychological support builds resilience and coping strength
✅ Re-evaluate: Sometimes, a second expert opinion or carefully planned revision surgery opens new doors

🌟If you're still struggling after spine surgery, Dr Colum Nolan is here to help you reframe, rebuild, and move forward.
