If you are Young and Sporty, be alert! Shoulder dislocation is a common sporting complication. Watch out for accidental falls on your outstretched arms- which causes the shoulder bone to get yanked out of the shoulder socket. How would one know if it is a shoulder dislocation? The shoulder may feel painful and swollen initially. Over time, the shoulder may feel unstable, where the joint is repeatedly dislocated from the socket.
What can one do in such situations?
First line treatment would usually involve targeted program of physical therapy to reduce swelling, improve joint stability and range of movement. In some cases, second lines of treatment include shoulder surgery, which helps to restore joint stability and ensure smoother resumption of active sports.
Here are some quick facts about shoulder stabilisation surgery from our shoulder and elbow, orthopaedic specialist, Dr Eileen Tay:
1. Keyhole surgery as a minimally invasive approach to shoulder surgery
2. Restore and repair original soft tissues around the shoulder- best for restoring stability
3. Estimated surgery for 1-1.5 hours
4. Same day discharge in a day surgery setting

Partial knee replacement, also know as half knee replacement has been gaining popularity in recent years. Partial knee replacement is a surgery for patient with knee pain and stiffness due to knee degeneration. Instead of removing the entire worn off knee, partial knee replacement only replaces the damaged half of the knee joint.
Some possible advantage of partial knee replacement:
1. Better preserves range of motion
2. Better preserves knee function
3. Smaller wound
4. Less blood loss
5. Speedier recovery
However, not all patients are suitable for partial knee replacement. Selecting the appropriate patient for partial knee replacement is crucial to ensuring a good outcome for this operation. Let our knee orthopaedic specialist, Dr Chin Tat Lim share his view on partial knee replacement.
