From 17-19 November 2023, I had the privilege of visiting ISEC Myanmar, where I got to see and help patients with severe eye diseases and visual impairment. I operated on three patients, including one with total retinal detachment from diabetes-related complications. The team at ISEC Myanmar was amazing, and I'm so grateful for their hospitality. It was truly humbling to make a difference in these patients' lives and see the smiles on their faces. Thank you,ISEC Myanmar, for an unforgettable experience. Together, we are making a difference in our patients’ lives.

Spent a fruitful morning at the Myopia Specialist Centre with Dr Stan Isaacs, Dr Brendan Chin and a group of optometrists discussing the important role that optometrists and General Practitioners play in community eye care.

The vast majority of retinal diseases are first detected by primary eye care practitioners. Early detection of these potentially blinding conditions by primary eye care practitioners, followed by timely referral and treatment by eye specialists can prevent the irreversible loss of vision.

Conventional surgery for full thickness macular hole involves pars plana vitrectomy with inner limiting membrane (ILM) peel and gas tamponade. More recently, ILM flaps have been advocated for larger macular holes to improve both anatomical and functional outcomes. In a meta analysis, the authors found that ILM flaps achieved significantly higher closure rates and better post operative visual outcomes than ILM peeling alone.

It is truly astounding to see cataract surgery transform from what was once strictly a sight saving surgery to what is now a safe, sutureless and generally painless procedure that not only improves vision, but also the quality of life of our patients.

In the Straits Times Wellness Column today, I discuss the use of Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) intraocular lens technology to help patients achieve a better quality of life through greater spectacle independence after cataract surgery. #老花

What are floaters and should I be worried?

Floaters are small dark shadows that move around in your vision. They can appear like blobs, dots, squiggly lines or cobwebs. DO NOT ignore floaters: They may be a symptom of an underlying retinal tear or retinal detachment. A thorough examination of the peripheral retina is needed to diagnose these sight threatening conditions.

A recently published study (Seider et al, Ophthalmology, July 2022) examined >8000 patients with new onset floaters. They found retinal tears or detachment in 9.7% of these patients. High myopia doubled the likelihood of these conditions.

Can cataract increase the risk of dementia?
Studies in the US and UK involving more than 300000 individuals have found a higher risk of dementia in cataract patients, but this risk could be lowered with cataract surgery.
