It was a pleasure to be interviewed by Medinex recently. We engaged them a few months ago to provide some much needed management support for our clinic. Ideal for small independent clinic businesses like mine looking for some backroom support, either temporarily (like in our case), or on a more long term basis.
I also had a chance to share the challenges I faced in starting out in private practice as an independent doctor.
Lessons from my first year in private practice:
1. Have a growth mindset
A growth mindset is a belief that one's abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as a path to mastery, and learn from criticism. Believe in yourself and strive to make everyone around you better.
2. Figure out your why before you figure out your how.
When faced with self-doubt, it helped me to remember my “why” eg autonomy to deliver ethical personalised patient care, self-growth, etc. The “how” to do something will sort itself out.
3. Have a faith
Having a faith can provide comfort and strength during times of struggle as it gives me a sense of purpose, optimism, and support. Trusting that the Lord has a plan for me.
4. Live within your means
Prepare 9-12 months of family savings, prepare your spouse, and children. Know your monthly budget. Try not to take a loan. Don’t overdo capital expenditures or you will feel the temptation to compromise on clinical standards.
5. Consider a leadership coach
One of the best things I did. We meet once a month and It helps to identify my strengths and weaknesses, especially how to work with others eg staff and colleagues
