Hernias develop when tissues or organs push through the weakened abdominal wall that normally holds it in place. Over time, this can present as a bulge, which can become more apparent with activity or straining.
Although hernias can occur in anyone, the risk is higher when the abdominal wall is weakened or repeatedly placed under strain. Factors that may increase intra-abdominal pressure and predispose you to a hernia include:
• Age
• Smoking
• Obesity and poor nutrition
• Poor recovery after surgery
• Chronic constipation
• Persistent coughing or sneezing
• Lifting heavy loads with poor posture
If you notice a painful bulge in the abdomen or groin, especially when coughing, standing, or bending, consult a hernia surgeon.
