Hernias develop when tissues or organs push through the weakened abdominal wall that normally holds it in place. Over time, this can present as a bulge, which can become more apparent with activity or straining.

Although hernias can occur in anyone, the risk is higher when the abdominal wall is weakened or repeatedly placed under strain. Factors that may increase intra-abdominal pressure and predispose you to a hernia include:

• Age
• Smoking
• Obesity and poor nutrition
• Poor recovery after surgery
• Chronic constipation
• Persistent coughing or sneezing
• Lifting heavy loads with poor posture

If you notice a painful bulge in the abdomen or groin, especially when coughing, standing, or bending, consult a hernia surgeon.

If you have been experiencing persistent abdominal pain, bloating and discomfort alongside unexplained changes in bowel habits and blood in stools, an endoscopy can be employed to evaluate the underlying cause.

Providing a visual examination of the inner lining of the digestive tract, an endoscopy can detect and/or treat gastrointestinal and biliary tract conditions such as:

• Colore**al cancer
• Stomach cancer
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Bile duct disorders (e.g. stones, cancer)
• Benign conditions such as ulcers, inflammation, polyps, piles, and diverticular disease
• Helicobacter pylori infection

At 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀, endoscopy procedures are performed by our senior consultant colore**al and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgeons, ensuring continuity of care from procedure through to review of findings and follow-up. Both male and female specialists are available, so care remains attentive and tailored to your needs.

𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 – inflammation or infection of the gallbladder – is a serious condition that requires timely treatment to prevent complications.

Initial complications include bile infection, gallbladder rupture, or tissue death. Longstanding or recurrent infections can also increase the risk of gallbladder cancer.

If you experience severe pain in the upper right or central abdomen, especially when accompanied by nausea, fever, chills, or rigours, seek medical advice promptly.📞𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝟲𝟰𝟱𝟰 𝟬𝟬𝟱𝟰 or 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘀𝗔𝗽𝗽 𝟵𝟬𝟭𝟮 𝟬𝟬𝟱𝟰

Haemorrhoids (piles) are a common condition, and pregnant women are especially prone to developing them. This is due to pressure from an enlarged uterus on the pelvic area, along with increased blood flow and hormonal changes during pregnancy that cause veins to relax and swell.

If you are experiencing piles during pregnancy and wish to seek safe and private care with a female colore**al specialist, reach out today.

Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes swollen and inflamed. This may happen suddenly (acute pancreatitis) or develop over time through repeated flare-ups that lead to long-term damage (chronic pancreatitis).

The pancreas is a vital organ – it produces digestive enzymes that help break down fat, protein and cholesterol, and also produces insulin to regulate blood sugar. When the pancreas is affected, both digestion and blood sugar control can be disrupted.

For specialist care in managing pancreatitis, schedule a consultation with Senior Consultant Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgeon, 𝗗𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗲𝗲.

Colore**al polyps are small growths that develop on the inner lining of the colon or re**um. While most are benign, some may become cancerous over time if not detected and removed early.

Polyps often cause no symptoms, which is why many people remain unaware of their presence. However, larger polyps may lead to:

• Bleeding
• Changes in bowel habits
• Abdominal pain
• Iron deficiency anemia
• Bowel obstruction
• Or, in some cases, progression to cancer.

Early detection remains the most effective way to prevent complications and ensure peace of mind.

If you are aged 50 or above, it is advisable to undergo a colonoscopy with a colore**al specialist. Individuals with a family history of colore**al cancer should consider screening at an earlier age.

When an a**l gland becomes infected, it can lead to the formation of a tunnel – known as an a**l fistula – between the inside of the a**l ca**l and the skin around the a**s.

If left untreated, patients may experience persistent pain, swelling, and discharge of pus or blood, with recurring infections that can cause further damage to the a**l sphincter muscles.

As an a**l fistula rarely heals on its own, surgical management is often required. Depending on the complexity of the fistula, different surgical techniques are required. The most common approach is a fistulotomy, where the tract is carefully opened along its length to allow it to heal as a flat scar.

Senior consultant colore**al surgeon, 𝗗𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗵 𝗦𝗶𝗲𝘄, has more than a decade of experience treating a**l fistulas.

10/11/2025

Gallstones are small, pebble-like stones that form in the gallbladder when there is an imbalance of bile components. Over time, they can range in size from a grain to a golf ball.

Gallstones often go unnoticed until they block the bile duct, leading to pain, inflammation, or infection of the gallbladder (cholecystitis). In more serious cases, they can cause jaundice or pancreatitis, which require prompt medical care.

Timely evaluation and management are essential to prevent complications. If you suspect gallstones or experience persistent digestive discomfort, seek specialist assessment today.
