Some diseases often go undiagnosed for too long, leaving patients to endure worsening symptoms and irreversible complications. Without timely identification and intervention, these conditions can drastically affect quality of life.
For Ridza Salim, his journey started with scattered symptoms which included headaches, vision changes, frequent falls, and eventually reliance on a wheelchair. Despite numerous tests, answers remained elusive.
With the help of Dr Daryl Tan, haematologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, and a dedicated multidisciplinary team - including specialists from haematology, neurology, endocrinology, cardiology, and more, they worked tirelessly to connect the dots. Using advanced diagnostic tools and extensive lab testing, the team confirmed the rare diagnosis of POEMS syndrome, a multisystem disease caused by abnormal plasma cells.
Ridza has since undergone a successful stem cell transplant and is making strides toward recovery. His resilience, paired with the expertise and collaboration of our specialists, highlights the importance of early diagnosis, interdisciplinary teamwork, and innovation in managing rare and complex diseases.
With Dr Tan’s support, Ridza is now focused on creating a mutual support platform for patients and caregivers. His goal is to share practical experiences, offer medical guidance and emotional support, and serve as a vital link between clinical care, research, and policy advocacy.
