It is common to experience mild itching or discomfort for a few days after cataract surgery.

Refractive cataract surgery combines standard cataract surgery with refractive correction to minimise or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses after the procedure.

This is achieved by replacing the natural, cloudy lens with an intraocular lens implant (IOL), designed to correct refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism.

For instance, a toric intraocular lens has the needed astigmatism correction inbuilt, while a multifocal intraocular lens provides clarity at both near and distance vision.

Cataract surgery is a quick, 30-minute procedure and is one of the most common and safest surgeries performed worldwide.

• Pausing medications that would increase the chance of bleeding during the surgery

Cataract is a common condition in those aged 40 and above; a cloudy area forms on the eye’s natural lens, causing hazy vision.

This cloudy formation is most commonly attributed to the natural process of ageing, due to the proteins and fibres in the lens breaking down and clumping together over time.
