In a cosy space aptly named Reminiscence room at Society for the Aged Sick (SAS), Mdm Ng was surrounded with the love of family, volunteers and her lifelong idol – Andy Lau.
Through a collaborative effort between her family, Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) Project Care and SAS, we hosted a Durian party for Mdm Ng featuring a screening of one of Andy Lau’s concerts.
Mdm Ng, 84, has battled aggressive cancer for years and is now in the final stages of her illness, where our focus is on providing comfort and care in her remaining days.
Though currently bedbound, Mdm Ng remains mentally sharp. She enjoys occasional games of Mahjong on her tablet and listening to her favourite Andy Lau songs.
When greeted at her party with a life-sized cutout of Andy Lau, her face lit up with the widest smile. One might call her his greatest fan she knows all his songs by heart yet watches his concert recordings with undimmed enthusiasm each time.
During the party, AWS volunteers and her family indulged Mdm Ng’s sweet tooth with durian, longans and chocolates – all of which were among her favourite sweet treats.
The durian party drew to a close with the song 爱你一万年 (Love You 10,000 Years) –one of Mdm Ng’s favourite Andy Lau tunes. It is a song about an unchanging heart and a love that transcends time.
