I've enjoyed swimming for many years and have tried all sorts of things to get water out!

Don't use cotton buds
I'll be honest with you. I've tried them. But they don't actually work, as the water is usually deep in the ear and "sticks" to the ear drum. This is the last place that you should put a cotton bud as it could easily injure your ear drum. Also, after swimming is probably the worst time to put a q-tip in your ear. The skin is soft and fragile after swimming, and it is easy to break the skin and introduce infection. If there is soggy wax in your ear, this could also end up being pushed deeper, worsening the blockage.

Use gravity
I have found that what works best for me is simply lying down in bed with the affected ear downwards. Inevitably the water eventually loses its hold on the ear drum, and flows out of the ear in a very gratifying way. There is usually only a small amount of water which will not soak your pillow in a big way. But if you want your pillow to remain dry, then simply lie with your ear on a towel.
