Our Story
Back in the 1960s, 3 Christian friends; Mdm Liew Choon Giok, Mdm Lau Kah Ying and Mdm Tan Kiat Jin, agreed to spend their golden years together. With another 4 ladies, they pooled their savings and bought a piece of property at 972C Upper Thomson Road. It was a simple wooden attap dwelling with 3 water wells and fruit trees in the compound.
The ladies subsequently took in homeless female elderly whom they met in Yishun and Sembawang, offering not only food and shelter, but also spiritual care. Their charity and generosity were the foundation to Singapore Christian Home for the Aged that was registered in 1977.
The Home moved a number of times over the years; 9 Buller Terrace at Queenstown, Ju Eng Home for Senior Citizens at 205 Jalan Kayu and the ‘Siberia Ward’ at 70 Jalan Tan Tock Seng before its current location at 20 Sembawang Crescent.
Moving into the Ministry of Health custom-built nursing home in May 2013 was a turning point; bed capacity increased 3-fold to 248, opening of a ward for male applicants and providing respite care service. The name was also changed in the same year to Singapore Christian Home, to reflect the diversity of financially challenged people the Home serves; from infants to centurions.
