The Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (Singapore) is a professional non-profit organization formed in 1990 to promote the discipline of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Singapore. It does so by organising professional continuing education for OMS surgeons in Singapore. The association advices on guidelines and benchmarks for minimal standards of practice for OMS surgery in Singapore. AOMSS member Dr Lee Chee Seng was awarded the Ministry of Health (MOH) Health and Manpower Development Award for a 6-month fellowship at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan.

He has shared some personal reflections about his fellowship journey ⬇️

“Honoured to have completed a 6-month Clinical & Research Fellowship with a focus on Skeletal Surgery for the management of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. It was eye-opening to follow patients with severe OSA throughout their journey, from the preoperative stage, through surgery, and into the postoperative period.

Throughout, I: - Attended 50+ clinical & educational meetings - Was involved in OSA, facial trauma, facial aesthetic, cleft lip/palate and endoscopic temporomandibular joint surgeries - Engaged in research with opportunities to publish

Deeply grateful to my mentor Professor Clement Lin, from whom I learned not only surgical and clinical skills but also life lessons.
Thankful as well to Professors Lo Lun Jou, Chen Chien Tzung, Chou Pang Yun, Liao Han Tsung, Frank Chang Chun Shin, Arthur Lin Yen Hung and Eric Liou for their invaluable guidance.
Beyond the training, I am thankful for the lifelong friendships made with colleagues from across the globe — Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Vietnam, Italy, Australia, Jordan, and India.

This fellowship has been a transformative experience, both professionally and personally.”

Swipe to see some moments from his fellowship — we’re proud of him for flying the Singapore flag high! 🇸🇬

AOMSS Social Event – Art Jam!

Our members gathered today at Motion Art Space for an exciting (and slightly chaotic 😅) art jam session! Some even brought along their adorable loved ones.

With paint flying everywhere and shirts getting stained, we ended up with a mix of messy disasters and truly magical masterpieces. But most importantly — everyone had a fantastic time bonding and creating together!

A big thank you to our Welfare Committee, Dr Wayne and Dr Kian How, for organising this fun-filled event. 🙌

Guest Lecture by Prof Andreas Fichter | 21 July 2025
Organised by NUS Faculty of Dentistry - CADE

NUS FOD had the privilege of hosting Prof Andreas Fichter, a renowned Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon from Germany and Head of the Department of OMS at Leipzig University since November 2024.

Prof Fichter’s expertise lies in head and neck tumours, particularly oral carcinoma, with extensive experience in complex bony reconstructions of the upper and lower jaw using CAD/CAM technology and supermicrosurgical techniques.

He began by sharing the scope and training pathway of OMS in Germany, followed by an insightful session on managing traumatic head and neck injuries. Adding a touch of fun, he even dressed up to give a special feature on Munich’s yearly Oktoberfest — including the most common facial trauma OMS see during the festival.

Interestingly, Prof Fichter revealed that he first met our local OMS, Dr John Loh, during the legendary 24-hour moonlight free flap harvesting course.

💬 “If you can survive a 24-hour free flap course… you can survive almost anything in the OR.” – Dr Loh

Dentofacial Trauma Symposium | 12–14 July 2025
Organised by NUS Faculty of Dentistry – CADE & NUCOHS

This post may be a little late — and already beautifully shared by Dr Yong Chee Weng — but it’s never too late to talk about the important role of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMS) in facial trauma care.

OMS are trained to manage facial trauma — from fractures to lacerations — often working alongside other surgical specialties for both acute and definitive care. With our foundation in dentistry, we’re uniquely equipped to restore occlusion, ensuring patients regain function, comfort, and confidence.

At the symposium, Dr Yong Chee Weng spoke on the initial assessment of facial trauma, and with fellow OMS Dr Matthias Chen and Dr Bernadette Quah guided participants through hands-on suturing on practice pads and lip models.

“The aim of the surgeon is not only to mend the broken, but to return the patient to the life they once knew.”

Stay tuned — our next post will feature another OMS-related event held by NUS - CADE

We’re excited to have our local OMS Dr Yong Chee Weng speak on the crucial topic of dental evaluation prior to osteoporosis treatment.
💥 Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) can lead to painful, non healing jaw lesions and in severe cases, requires surgical debridement or jaw resection. Don’t miss this valuable session to find out more about preventive protocols, risk assessment and surgical interventions when conservative measures fail.

World Head and Neck Cancer Day 🌍

Head and Neck Cancer includes a wide spectrum of oncological conditions. Among them, oral cancer is a key area where Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMS) play a pivotal role—not only in diagnosis and surgical resection, but also in functional and aesthetic reconstruction.

OMS who subspecialise in oral oncology often undergo further training through head and neck oncology or microvascular reconstruction fellowships. One such example is Dr Sha Yang .sy , a recipient of the prestigious IAOMS 2025 Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction Fellowship. We look forward to sharing more through an upcoming interview with her.

On this important day, we take the opportunity to raise awareness about oral cancer. Swipe through to learn about the common causes and warning signs.
Early detection saves lives.

“The earlier you diagnose cancer, the more lives you save. That’s where the power of awareness truly lies.”
— Dr Jatin Shah, world-renowned Head and Neck Surgeon
