What Is the BrostrΓΆm Procedure?
The BrostrΓΆm procedure is a term for the surgical repair of ankle ligaments. There are several ways to perform it, and one commonly used approach involves arthroscopy (keyhole surgery).
With this technique, a small camera is placed into the joint, and the torn ankle ligaments are repaired. An βinternal braceβ is often used during the repair. A simple way to picture this is to imagine supporting a hammock with a strip of tape: one end is anchored to a tree, the tape is brought across, tightened, and anchored on the other side.
Potential advantages of keyhole ligament repair with an internal brace include immediate mechanical stability during surgery, which may support early rehabilitation. Over time, patients who undergo ankle ligament repair may resume normal activities, including sports, depending on their recovery and individual condition.
This approach aims to combine a smaller surgical incision with a stable ligament repair. If you have ongoing ankle instability or are exploring treatment options, discuss your situation with an orthopaedic specialist to determine what is suitable for you.
