Orthopaedic surgery involves treatment of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system. Examples of conditions that orthopaedic surgery might aim to treat are fractures, FHO, patellar luxation, and cruciate ligament rupture.

A 2020 review of studies on post-surgery recovery for companion animals found that rehab after surgery can help with restoring strength, function, coordination, and balance. Here are some key takeaways to note:

- For 72 hours post-surgery, rehab should focus on reducing pain and inflammation, as well as restoring range of motion, maintaining joint nutrition, and increasing blood flow. Rehab modalities that can help include cryotherapy, passive range of motion (PROM) exercises, and massage.

- After the initial recovery period, rehab can progress to helping the patient recover strength, balance, gait, and original function. Rehab exercises that help with this include hydrotherapy and therapeutic exercises. Pets are encouraged to increase their activity levels during this time!

- Other rehab modalities such as photobiomodulation (laser therapy), therapeutic ultrasound, and shockwave therapy can also help to reduce recovery time and improve healing in both the early and late stages of recovery from orthopaedic surgery.

Acupuncture doesnโ€™t have to be East or West.

It can be both!

Different language, same healing goal!

Traditional acupuncture relies on the principle of Qi, the vital energy that flows throughout the body from the organs to the tissues via channels called meridians. In TCM, disease and pain is caused by imbalance of energies in the meridians and blockage of Qi flow. To correct these balances and restore Qi flow, acupoints located along the meridians are stimulated by needles. Regulation of Qi flow and energy balance leads to pain relief.

Modern veterinary medicine has attempted to explain how acupuncture works on a physiological level. Acupoints are defined as neurovascular bundles which contain concentrated areas of free nerve endings, small blood vessels, lymphatics, and mast cells. When needles are placed into acupoints, they provide sensory stimulation to tissues, triggering a local reaction that causes anti-inflammatory and immune responses and increases blood flow. Additionally, acupuncture induces the release of endogenous opioids - the bodyโ€™s natural painkillers such as endorphins - into the surrounding area. These various effects contribute to pain relief, inflammation reduction, and muscle relaxation in the area of insertion.

REST is necessary. But prolonged rest is not recovery.

Complete rest has a role.
Prolonged rest has consequences.

Muscle atrophy starts quickly.
Joints stiffen.
Strength declines.

Recovery is a balance between protection and progression.

The right rehab plan introduces controlled movement to:
โ€ข Maintain muscle
โ€ข Protect healing tissue
โ€ข Improve long-term outcomes

Rehab isnโ€™t pushing too hard.
Itโ€™s preventing decline while healing happens.

Save this if your pet is recovering from surgery or injury.
