On 9 September, Dr Ng Lok Pui, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Clinical Services), together with Clinical Associate Professor Tan Ngiap Chuan, Director of Research, unveiled the "Golden Tree of Life" at Pasir Ris Polyclinic! This painting, put together by all members of SHP's research team, represents not just the collective strength but also the unwavering commitment that defines SingHealth Polyclinics.

If you look closely at the painting, every element tells a story. The trunk embodies the unity and teamwork that anchors everything we do. The branches showcase our relentless pursuit of growth and collaborative achievements. The golden leaves reflect the excellence and resilience that drive us to deliver exceptional patient care, every day.

Thank you to the SHP Research team for this collaborative effort, showing that when we come together with shared purpose, we don't just create art; we create symbols of our commitment to shaping a brighter future for every patient we serve.

Who says healthy can’t be delicious? 🤤

On 22 August, 25 participants joined our nurses and dietitian at Outram Polyclinic for a hands-on Healthy Meal Prep Workshop.

From hearty tuna salad to protein-packed tempeh sandwiches, crispy rice paper seaweed snacks, and creamy Greek yoghurt parfaits, our participants cooked, tasted, and learned how to make healthy eating fun and fuss-free! Our dietitian also shared practical cooking tips and tricks, and answered questions to help make healthy eating sustainable at home.

How do polyclinics prepare for the unthinkable?

On 13 August, SingHealth Polyclinics organised its inaugural Field Medical Team (FMT) engagement session, put together by SHP Crisis Planning & Operations (CPO) and the Civil Emergency Task Group. We were privileged to have speakers from MOH Crisis Strategy & Operations and Commander DSMC (Disaster Site Medical Command).

Our SHP speakers shared the crucial role that polyclinic clusters play in the national emergency response framework, and how FMT members contribute during times of crisis.

To our FMT doctors and nurses: thank you for your dedication and for spending the afternoon learning more about emergency preparedness!

: Our Research Story, Written Together

Both Singapore and Clin Assoc Prof Tan Ngiap Chuan, Director, Research, SingHealth Polyclinics celebrate turning 60 this year. His journey from clinician to research leader in primary care is shaped by resilience, curiosity and the drive to build a healthier future. Clin Assoc Prof Tan’s story is part of Our Research Story, Written Together at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (AMC).

“Local researchers tend to be committed, resilient and creative in overcoming challenges. And I count myself among them.” he shares. From navigating grant applications to publishing research, Clin Assoc Prof Tan remained unfazed. “To think collaterally to find and test possible solutions for emerging issues is an inner strength that allows me to further primary care research in Singapore amidst incredibly challenging terrain.”

His curiosity was sparked by a simple but powerful desire. He wants to help people achieve better health and happiness. Observing gaps in patient care and healthcare systems drove him to search for root causes and adapt or develop solutions for local needs.

A defining moment came in 2021, when SingHealth Polyclinics was awarded the RIE2025 Centre Grant (CG) by the National Research Foundation to implement a research programme aimed at improving preventive health. The team’s efforts resulted in new care models now enhancing the health of Singapore’s diverse population.

One sterling example of how care delivery to newborns and their parents can be transformed through research and innovation is BiliSG. It is an AI-empowered mobile application to assess neonatal jaundice. This is made possible by cross-specialty collaboration between family doctors and neonatologists

Looking ahead, Clin Assoc Prof Tan is hopeful. “Just as Singapore has transformed from an entrepot to a thriving metropolis over 60 years, research will significantly change the healthcare landscape in Singapore in the next 60 years.” He believes research is the key to unlock the vast potential of creative applications of medical technology and AI solutions to boost the nation’s health.
