I’ve not been great at updating, when you’re relaxing and on holiday time flies and even with tonnes of free time I don’t feel like posting. I made this account for fun so I don’t ever post if I’m not feeling like it. We are almost halfway through our cruise, we have multiple days at sea during which time I am aiming to do self practise. I finally, finally, finally downloaded .moves as I had wanted to try ’s backbend method. I am working on my backbends and trying to deepen them whilst I have the time I can dedicate to them without being too tired to do anything like normal!

Had a sensational Vinyasa Level 2-3 class at this morning, full of deep backbends. I was always super afraid of backbends as I felt I would hurt myself and never practised them for years. When I started Dharma yoga I came to love backbends and realise they are perfectly safe if you take time and warm up fully! The studio at Desa Seni is stunning, the studio set in a beautiful tropical jungle garden. Nothing like hearing the sounds of nature as you practise.

Back to basics making shapes. My hammies have randomly been playing up this week, two months plus since I recovered from my serious right hamstring pull and left sensitivity probably from over compensation. I’m taking it easy for the next few days to prepare for Bali as I want to take full advantage of all the yoga offerings there!

I was taught a new posture the other day by my friend Selina, the queen of funky asanas. This is technically a Bird of Paradise pose flat on the mat, although we dubbed it the flattened lizard. You come to the posture from lizard lunge, and it helps if you imagine a lizard being steamrolled.

Bound lizard Lunge, or Utthan Pristhasana in my ! One of my favourite hip openers, adding in the bind transforms the posture to more of a balance, making it more challenging meaning the whole body has to be engaged.

Revolved Chapasana, or revolved sugarcane pose, getting easier every time I try. Revolved anything used to be my nemesis, I have a short torso so for me these postures are particularly challenging. Eventually however you learn how your body works and how it’s different from other bodies.

One of my fave postures, if you have ever been to my class you probably have done a called triangle. In the UK we exclusively called this ‘starburst twist’ and it took a few months to call it by the name it’s better known as here. At first floating the lower leg can seem impossible. I remember the first time I did came across this posture (as I strangely seem to do with most postures, does anyone else get this?!) and it was so impossible, let alone trying to float. Newbie tip, slide the lower foot away from you towards the back of the room and it’ll make it easier to lift. As you progress see if you can lift it straight up!

If you scroll fast enough back and forth through these you can make it look like I’m doing some kind of Russian Cossack dance. Malanasana, Garland Pose aka the Yogi Squat I was familiar with in the UK but its bound variations were new to me when I came to Singapore. Pressing the weight down equally over both feet is the biggest challenge. Deep chest rotations are my goal.

I must say I am very proud of this , pose to the Sage Vishvamitra. My chest might not be fully rotating yet and I might look a little awkward, but this is the strongest and easiest I’ve ever been in this posture.

I’ve noticed that yoga in Singapore and yoga in the UK are very different. I distinctly remember in my first ever class here, we did a pose I had never ever come across before, the above pose Skandasana or side lunge. I was gobsmacked that all these people could easily ground both the heel on the bent leg and bring the calf of the straight leg to touch the mat! It was impossible the first few times I tried it. It features heavily in Singapore classes when I had never even come across it in a UK class. Since then I’ve noticed this a lot, poses I know well and use frequently are completely alien to my students here. Has anyone else noted this?
Two side notes.
1. Apologies for my stupid face. I still haven’t got the not doing a “serious concentration murderous face” in pictures.
2. I have done something to my left hamstring now 🙄 About a week ago I did a class and after it was hurting. Nothing as bad as I did the right side, but still means I can’t go as deep. Hence the obvious difference in the picture with the left leg straight. Hoping it will maybe even out all those months I couldn’t practise on the right side 🤣

Not done this variation for a while, probably why it’s still tough to bind! Revolved bound lunge is a posture I learned how to do from Dharma yoga, it always feels really good, I should do it more often!
