DRUG FREE STORY FEATURE #4 - ZAC EFRON

While some people dream of being rich and famous and believe that celebrities live the perfect life, those in the spotlight may not agree. Fame tends to come with certain drawbacks, such as being constantly under the watch of the world’s media and the public wanting to know every little thing that goes on in the celebs lives. This can be very stressful for some celebrities and many of them end up turning to substances such as alcohol or drugs to help them cope. Unfortunately, this can lead to illnesses like alcoholism and co***ne addiction.

Actor Zac Efron has spoken up about his addiction struggles, and he said that the pressures of fame meant he avoided hobbies that he normally enjoyed for fear of being followed by members of the public. The star, who rose to fame in the High School Musical movies, became an instant heartthrob and was constantly under the spotlight. He admits that he found it hard to cope with the media intrusion and turned to co***ne and alcohol in order to deal with public life. As a result, he developed an addiction that led to him spending time in rehab during 2013.

Thankfully, Zac is now in recovery and works hard to stay clean and sober. He said that he had to make changes to his life to stay that way, adding, “What I found is structure. That led me to a balance of opposites. You get out of life what you put in.”

He described how he used to Google himself as soon as he got up in the morning until he realised that looking at himself through other people’s eyes was not a good idea. He says that he was not living his own life or being himself, and he had quit hobbies such as surfing or skateboarding, which he previously enjoyed. Since recovering from addiction, Zac has resumed his favourite activities, and said, “Crossing the line of fear is what leads to greatness.”

DRUG FREE STORY FEATURE #3 - ROBIN WILLIAMS

Robin Williams abused co***ne and alcohol throughout the 1980s. He also suffered from depression. Williams credits the overdose of John Belushi as the ‘wake up’ call he needed to get help with his own addiction. Williams relapsed in 2006 but immediately sought out help by attending a rehab clinic.

To fill the void created by his recovery, Williams took up regular exercise and cycling. These activities helped William alleviate the depression he felt due to the death of his friend, Belushi. In fact, Williams is credited as saying ‘cycling saved my life’. In 2010, he revealed he continued to struggle with alcoholism throughout his life.

Tragically, Robin Williams committed su***de in 2014 after a battle with Lewy body disease.

DRUG FREE STORY FEATURE #2 - ROBERT DOWNEY JR

Robert Downey Jr who plays the famous marvel role of Iron Man used to bond with His Father over Drugs. Read how the Actor overcame his years of addiction...

His journey to recovery is no secret, especially after his meteoric rise to popularity in Marvel’s Iron Man film series. Downey was born into the limelight. His first film role came when he was only five years old. He says he was brought up ‘surrounded by drugs’. His father allowed him to smoke cannabis at the age of six. He says his father would ‘do drugs’ with him as a way of bonding with his son.

Downey said: “When my dad and I would do drugs together, it was like him trying to express his love for me is the only way he knew how.”

Ironically, one of his early films was “Less Than Zero,” (a film made in the mid-1980s) which was a story about at a young man so consumed by addiction that he died of an overdose.

When Downey was addicted to he**in, his life was spiraling out of control. He was arrested numerous times and even spent six months in jail when he failed to attend a court-ordered drug test. Finally, Downey managed to quit drugs in 2001. Downey relied on a number of holistic therapies and filled the void left by his abstinence by taking up yoga and Wing Chun kung fu. He also credits the support he received from his spouse as the source of his success in recovery. Downey is also an advocate of 12-step recovery programs.

BREATHTAKING DRUG FREE STORY FEATURE #1 - AIDNAN

At age 14, Aidnan was smoking ma*****na and to***co daily, multiple times a day. Smoking ma*****na helped him forget who he was, the feeling of getting out of his own skin was amazing. Since that first hit, he loved it. He knew then, he can use this substance to change how he feel, or not feel at all. That’s exactly what he wanted at that point in his life.

At age 17, he began to wonder, he began to realize he was not good at school or sports, so what was he going to do with his life. He was hanging around with the wrong people who told him that he didn’t need school and all he needed was them, and it will be alright. He believed them. He was looking for something to belong to. He felt at home.

He said yes and used co***ne for the first time. It didn’t phase him and he began using co***ne at school and eventually got enough so that he could make some extra cash.

From what he remember, it was to be “cool” to fit in with a certain crowd. As far as he could remember he did not fit in with anyone and wanted to be apart of something. He just wanted people to enjoy my presence and to like who he was, but he didn’t know who he was and he didn’t like himself. He felt worthless from a young age and that developed into an even lower level of self-esteem as a teenager.

A few years went by, which were the most eye opening years of his life, now that he looks back at them.

Brown sugar. That brown substance was he**in. Something that he had never felt before in my life. He had never felt so lost in his mind. It was amazing. He was hooked. He loved it.

He lost the closest person to him, his best friend. In January 2016, his best friend overdosed and passed away. He was the person who understood him, who understood what exactly he was going through with his brother. He was always there for him, always. Now he lost two extremely important people in my life.

All thanks to his recovery and the 12-Step program. Being in a 12-Step program gave him the tools to get through tragedy.
