😥 When individuals you support are experiencing emotional distress, how do you respond while maintaining professional boundaries?
Together with the NCSS Social Service Institute (SSI), we’re supporting social service practitioners by sharing practical skills that help them respond to distress while safeguarding their own wellbeing - Register here @ https://pfa-webinar.app.entry.gov.sg/form/d05b456d-53f0-45ee-b865-1ef47a060796
In this webinar, we’ll explore how Psychological First Aid (PFA) can support everyday social service practice.
Participants will gain insights into:
• How PFA is applied across different social service settings, from supporting seniors in eldercare contexts to assisting families in Family Service Centres
• Common challenges practitioners face when supporting distressed individuals, and how structured PFA approaches can strengthen confidence while maintaining appropriate boundaries
• What PFA is — and what it is not, to better align expectations on its role in practice
The session will also introduce the Psychological First Aid Plus (PFA+) programme, which further develops practical skills to support both service users and practitioners in the social service sector.

The webinar will be hosted by Ms Nurul Fadzilah, Curriculum Lead at the Centre for Psychosocial Resilience and Humanitarian Studies (CPRHS), Singapore Red Cross Academy, who will share her practical experience applying PFA across different settings.

In the spirit of International Women’s Day, we’re also highlighting the women who equip others with the skills to help
At the Singapore Red Cross Academy (SRCA), preparedness begins with people who are willing to share their knowledge, time and experience so that others can step forward with confidence
🩷 Michelle Seah started her journey as a youth volunteer. Today, as a Senior Instructor at SRCA, she trains individuals of all ages in practical first aid and life-saving skills, helping more people gain the confidence to respond when it matters most

🩷 Durga Naidu, who leads the Centre for Psychosocial Resilience and Humanitarian Studies, champions the importance of psychosocial preparedness. Through education and training, she helps individuals and organisations better understand how to support people facing stress, trauma and crisis
Together, they represent the many women at the Singapore Red Cross Academy who work behind the scenes to strengthen community readiness and resilience, and to advance conversations on how psychosocial safety can stand alongside physical safety.

We’re proud to see Michelle and Durga featured in World of Safety & Health Asia, contributing to these ongoing discussions

When is Psychological First Aid (PFA) the right approach? While therapy and PFA both play important roles, they serve different purposes
✅ Timing
PFA is given immediately after a distressing event.
Therapy happens later, often over multiple sessions.

✅ Purpose
PFA focuses on stabilising and supporting someone in the moment.
Therapy explores deeper issues and works toward long-term recovery.

✅ Who can do it
Anyone with basic PFA training can provide support.
Therapy should only be conducted by trained mental health professionals
Understanding the difference empowers us to respond with confidence, offering help in the moment without overstepping our role

🤝 As part of Total Defence Day efforts, the Centre for Psychosocial Resilience & Humanitarian Studies (CPRHS) set up an outreach booth at Chongfu School in collaboration with the Red Cross Youth (RCY)
Through our interactive Kindness Tree activity, students shared messages of encouragement and simple acts of care they can show to others, reflecting how small actions can strengthen those around us
.
The activity provided a meaningful way to introduce psychosocial resilience concepts in an age-appropriate manner, while reinforcing the importance of looking out for one another in the spirit of Total Defence
.
Together, we continue to nurture resilience early, building a generation that understands collective responsibility and is ready to support their communities

🚨 Did you know? Heart attacks and cardiac arrest are different conditions
👉 A heart attack is a circulation problem occurring when a part of the heart muscle does not get enough blood due to a blocked artery caused by atherosclerosis and dies in the process as a result of oxygen deprivation, giving rise to crushing chest pain

👉 Cardiac arrest is an “electrical problem”, occurring when the heart stops beating unexpectedly or malfunctions. A cardiac arrest is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). When the pumping action is disrupted, the heart cannot pump oxygen-rich blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. This can lead to death within minutes.
What’s the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest?
✅ A heart attack happens when blood flow to the heart is blocked, causing damage to the heart muscle.
✅ During a heart attack, the heart usually continues beating.
✅ A cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood due to an electrical malfunction.
✅ The person may collapse, lose consciousness, and stop breathing or gasp.
✅ Most heart attacks do not lead to cardiac arrest, but a heart attack is a common cause of cardiac arrest.
✅ Cardiac arrest can also occur due to other heart rhythm problems, even without a heart attack.
✅ Cardiac arrest is often caused by abnormal heart rhythms, such as ventricular fibrillation (VF) or asystole.
✅ Without immediate treatment, loss of consciousness occurs within seconds, and death can follow within minutes.
✅ Early CPR and prompt use of an AED are critical to survival

Over the past weekend, Singapore Red Cross Academy was part of two events that strengthened community readiness and resilience
On 31 January 2026, the Centre for First Aid & Resuscitation (CFAR), in collaboration with the Singapore Heart Foundation, organised the first Community First Responder Sharing Session of 2026 -bringing community members together to build confidence in responding to cardiac emergencies.

During the session, colleagues from the Centre for Psychosocial Resilience & Humanitarian Studies (CPRHS) shared practical Psychological First Aid (PFA) tips, highlighting how responders can care for their own mental wellbeing and support one another before and after attending to a cardiac arrest case.

Over the same weekend, CFAR was also part of the Total Defence activities at SAFRA Clubs @ Tampines, engaging the public through outreach that raised awareness of CPR and essential first aid skills.

Together, we continue to build communities that are ready, physically and mentally, to respond when it matters most

🫂As we step into the new year, it’s a good reminder to check in on the people around us
When someone is distressed, they don’t usually reach out to a psychologist straight away. Moreoften than so, they require a safe space and a listening presence
Psychological First Aid (PFA) teaches you how to:
- Stay grounded
- Recognise your own limits
- Support without taking on the other person's stress

🎄 CPR, but make it festive ❤️
During CPR, chest compressions should be delivered at a steady rate of 100–120 beats per minute. Using familiar songs can help learners remember the correct pace when it matters
From all of us at Singapore Red Cross Academy, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season!

Sometimes, we minimise someone’s feelings without meaning to, even when our intentions are good. Common phrases like “It’s normal” or “Just be positive” can unintentionally shut down meaningful conversations
Psychological First Aid (PFA) equips individuals to respond more thoughtfully in challenging emotional situations, especially when we are unsure what to say or afraid of saying the wrong thing
Through PFA, you learn how to recognise early emotional shifts, listen without judgement, and offer calm, confident support to help someone navigate a difficult moment
