Collapsed lung: what you should know:

A collapsed lung (pneumothorax) happens when air leaks out of the lung and stops it from fully expanding.

It can occur suddenly, sometimes without injury, and may cause chest pain or shortness of breath.
Some cases settle with observation, while others need treatment.

I’m Dr Harish Mithiran, lung & chest surgeon at Neumark Lung & Chest Surgery Centre, Singapore.

I look after conditions such as and , collapsed lung (pneumothorax), mediastinal conditions, and excessive sweating of the hands ( ). Where appropriate, I use minimally invasive techniques like and robotic-assisted surgery to help patients recover faster and with less disruption to daily life.

Behind the scenes, I’ve performed over 2,500 thoracic procedures and continue to be involved in training and education within the thoracic surgery community, but in the clinic, my priority is simple: clear explanations, thoughtful planning, and personalised care.

Many early cases have no symptoms.

Screening is low-dose CT for eligible high-risk groups. Treatment can include surgery, radiation, chemo, targeted or immunotherapy, often combined.
