In recent months, we have seen a spotlight in the press & media on , and in Singapore. As an Organisational Psychologist at Chi Tree Health, we see it too. Corporates we work with report single digit number of employees who are , & equally those who are . Roughly 90% of the workforce are âfeeling the heatâ whilst coping, & asking for additional support.
Kudos to employers who have come a long way towards including the topic of mental wellbeing at work. Conversations encouraging meaningful , , & have been trending all year. Challenges are recognised, & âsupport 201â is making an entrance (with 101 being fruit baskets, & random days off only to have emails piled up even more!). There is still a way to go in providing strategic employee support, including easy onsite access to Psychologists & Counsellors who can share tools & techniques for better stress management & burnout prevention.
Letâs take a pause here, celebrate our wins, & thereâs so much more to do in 2024! Meanwhile⊠Have yourself a merry (little) Christmas, & let your heart be light⊠oh &⊠Put your inner critique on the shelf with the elf!
âThis should be the best Christmas tree yet⊠I should make the most delicious Christmas dinnerâ
If these âshouldsâ sound familiar, then keep an eye out for social media comparisons & Christmas catastrophizing. It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but emotions and expectations are high while society sells us a story of the perfect Christmas. These multiple âshouldsâ can be a slippery slope providing fuel for our inner critics that feed on the gap between the 'shoulds' and our reality.
If Christmas could speak, let it ask you to loosen the reins on perfectionism, & not let your inner critic steal the festive spotlight. (I'm putting mine on the shelf with the elf!) If you're lucky enough to be surrounded by loved ones listening to Michael Bublé, &opening the tin of Quality Street, nobody really gives a fa la la la if your halls are decked to perfection or if the turkey is a tad bit burnt.
