💡Did you know we don’t have five senses but actually eight? Yes sight, sound, smell, touch and taste are the ones we all know about and experience daily, but there are three others - proprioception, vestibular and tactile.

These sensory ‘systems’ give our brains detailed feedback on the world around us so that we can judge how to move our body, coordinate, balance and have effective responses.

In some cases, these systems are underdeveloped causing issues with the integration of messages to our brains 🧠This can be an over or under reaction, hypersensitivity or result in sensory seeking behaviour.

There is a link between sensory integration and autism spectrum disorder. You can find out more in our blog 👉🏻 Link in Bio

Good vision is not just about eyesight. Being able to see clearly involves the eyes and the brain, and an efficient, functional relationship between the two.

An optometrist tests how the eyes receive information through a regular eye test. However, this is not always the full picture. Vision encompasses the way that the brain interprets that information and acts upon it.

Vision Therapy is a specialist treatment that works to improve visual processing problems, which can include letter reversal, eye tracking issues, depth perception and lazy eye, amongst others.

These processing insufficiencies can cause difficulty reading and spelling, plus headaches, and are often misdiagnosed as dyslexia or ADHD. If you suspect you or your child may have vision problems read more in our blog 👉🏻 Link in Bio or get in touch.

Neurofeedback is up there with one of those weird and wonderful therapies that is still rather misunderstood. The presence of electrodes on the head and being hooked up to a computer monitoring your brain waves, can be intimidating.

But this neurological therapy is fast becoming recognised as a successful treatment for ADHD, ADD, Autism and other attention and focus related conditions.

This non-invasive, brain mapping therapy is ideal for those who want to avoid medications. It works with the neuroplasticity of our brains to rewire new connections and help it function more efficiently.

🧠 What does it mean to have a high IQ? What is a high IQ score? Is there any value in knowing your IQ? And can you improve your IQ?

Your Intelligence Quotient is a single score taken from a range of profiling tests and it is measured on a scale compared to peers in your age group. The tests cover a range of cognitive skills such as processing speed, working memory and reasoning power.

💡 Knowing your IQ can give you much more than just conversational bragging rights. It can give you valuable insight into your own brain’s strengths and weaknesses and help you forge a path for success.

And yes YOU CAN improve your IQ by optimising your brain health! Brains are amazing, they are constantly adapting and growing, so if you’re interested in knowing more 👉🏻 Link in Bio

Right brain training centres are becoming increasingly popular for child enrichment. So what is the benefit of training your right brain versus your left brain?

🧠 The left hemisphere of your brain controls logical thinking, reasoning, objectivity and analytical skills. Conversely the right side governs imagination, creativity, emotion and subjectivity⚡.

The right brain skills are generally more slow to develop in children, yet their presence elevates a child’s memory retention and data processing. This in turn can lead to greater self confidence and faster progression 🙋🏾.

Read about the two main schools of right brain education, Hegeru and Schichida, here. 👉🏻 https://www.ifnsingapore.com/blog/why-should-we-right-brain-train-and-which-method-is-best

Asperger’s is not a term you hear so much these days. Did they find a cure? Did it go away? The reason is actually that Asperger’s is not an official, standalone brain disorder diagnosis any longer.

💡Asperger’s has in fact been reclassified as a collection of symptoms on the autism spectrum.

Why is this important? It is a step to us understanding more about how our brains work, that experts are now able to identify mild autism symptoms in this way, so that we can move towards successful recognition and management of neurodiversity 🧠.

🏆Why do some people achieve more than others?

💡Numerous studies have shown that grit predicts achievement-related outcomes in many professional domains. However, having more grit does not necessarily translate into having better cognitive performance 🧠
👉🏻 Grit involves the tendency to strive to achieve long-term goals with continual passion and perseverance even in the face of setbacks and plays an extremely crucial role in personal achievement.

“ Everyone has the capacity for grittiness” - Psychologist, Angela Lee Duckworth. It’s possible to cultivate grit while practising mindfulness meditation but this essentially boils down to finding what you love, giving yourself the courtesy of believing what you’re doing is worthwhile, and sticking to it. People can only learn grit if they view failures as setbacks. Ultimately, whether or not you find success is in part related to how you interpret your situation — and you may have more control over your future than you realize.

: How gritty are you? 💪🏻

💡Have you heard of “oxytocin” a.k.a. “The Love Hormone”? 💕

🧠Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter and a hormone that is produced in the hypothalamus. From there, it is transported to and secreted by the pituitary gland, at the base of the brain. It impacts bonding behavior, the creation of group memories, social recognition, and other social functions.

👉🏻 The hormone has been described as “an important component of a complex neurochemical system that allows the body to adapt to highly emotive situations.” It has been proved to decrease stress and anxiety levels when released into certain parts of the brain.

Good news is…It’s relatively easy to raise your oxytocin levels—it all comes down to making social connections and bonds. Simple things such as getting a massage, listening to music, giving someone a hug or even… petting a dog! 🐶

Meltdowns = Developing Brain

🙋🏻‍♀️ Don’t we all agree that toddlers are one of the most authentic creatures on this planet, and also, arguably, the most misunderstood? On the surface, we see meltdowns, defiance, and limit testing. We wonder why they are clingy, manipulative, and difficult.

💡 But there’s so much more than what meets the eye. This period of life is the most rapid period for brain development with about 700 new neural connections being produced each second. It’s this biology that greatly explains their big emotions and challenging behaviors.
Yet… “meltdowns” are just how children diffuse their stress and overwhelm; it is how their little brains are working really hard to understand their world, feeling more like an adult yet having a brain that feels more than it actually thinks 🧠

Just so you know…your toddler doesn't enjoy tantrums and they did not intentionally throw a tantrum to manipulate us - it’s simply something they can’t control. The next time you deal with their meltdowns, take it as an opportunity for you to connect and deepen the trust your children already have in you 💪🏻

🙌🏼 Hands up whose New Year’s resolution is to get fitter and healthier in 2023?

🏃🏾‍♀️If yours is raised, it will be in good company. Many of us focus on new gym memberships, enter fitness events or aim to get more walks in instead of using the car. But how many of us realise just how good exercise is for your brain?

💡Adults and children alike retain more information and have better memory and processing speed after a period of movement, due to increased circulation and oxygen supply and a sharpening of neural connections.

🧠 So while you’re off on your Holiday break this year, commit to moving more and love your brain as well as your body.

👉🏻 You've probably seen the classic piece of "internet trivia" in the image above before - it's been circulating since at least 2003. On first glance, it seems legit. Because you can actually read it, right? But, while the meme contains a grain of truth, the reality is always more complicated 🤯

💡The phenomenon has been given the slightly tongue-in-cheek name "typoglycemia," and it works because our brains don't just rely on what they see - they also rely on what we expect to see 👀

🧠 In typoglycemia, our brain reads and comprehend individual words as a whole. This explains how we can look at a string of scrambled letters and still be able to see the dominant patterns in them, i.e. the first and final letters. Our brains are able to fill in the blanks (the de-arranged letters), an editing process that now makes the words fit our expectations and projections.

If you’re intrigued by this, there are many online typoglycemia generators that you can try out with and simply have some fun quizzing your brain!

Do you enjoy popcorn? 🍿If you do, the good news is popcorn is a TOP snack for keeping your brain sharp 🧠

When it's air-popped and lightly seasoned, popcorn is an efficiently healthy snack. That's because it is a whole grain, and high-fibre whole grains have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and other health problems 🩺

If you’re looking to lose some weight, popcorn is a great food for its high fibre content (providing high satiety), its low calorie count and its low energy density too! However, this does not mean you should start stuffing yourself with popcorn - similar for all foods, moderation is key 🔑

Did you know that “dopamine” is also coined as the “reward hormone”? 😍

💡Dopamine is a chemical released after your brain achieves a goal and it makes you feel good. The more goals you achieve on a regular basis, the neural pathways in your brain get stronger. So the more regularly you achieve the goals you set, the hit of dopamine will become stronger 💪🏻

🧠Having the right amount of dopamine is essential both for your body and your brain. The simplest way to hack your dopamine is to set yourself very small, achievable goals every day, and actually achieve them for regular hits of dopamine.

👉🏻 If you perceive yourself to be enjoying something, your brain releases more dopamine which motivates you to want to do it again in the future. Kickstart your day with a small goal today, as simple as squeezing in a quick jog in between your hectic schedule 🏃🏻

🤯 Brain freeze is also known as ice cream headache, cold stimulus headache, and sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia.

👉🏻 It is a short-term headache typically linked to the rapid consumption of ice cream, ice pops, or very cold drinks 🥶

The good news is…it can be extremely uncomfortable, but it’s harmless ❄️

Interestingly, there’s a simple cure you can do on your own to eliminate the sensation! 👇🏻

👅 Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth (for as long as it takes) for the brain freeze to disappear completely. Experiencing a brain freeze, try it and let us know if this works for you 😍
