Something to think about
From an agricultural apprenticeship to the 2026 presidency: a trajectory that’s quintessentially Swiss. 🇨🇭
In Switzerland, career paths are diverse. Guy Parmelin began with an agricultural apprenticeship, combining practical training and formal education, then earned a Federal PET Diploma in agriculture and winegrowing before entering politics. A reminder of the strength of the Swiss vocational education and training system. 🎓
Before his election to the Federal Council in 2015 and his first term as President of the Confederation in 2021, Guy Parmelin co-owned and operated a vineyard and farm. As head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, his background continues to shape his perspective. 🏛️
In Switzerland, the Presidency is not a head-of-state role like in other countries. Every year, one of the seven Federal Councillors becomes President. The President:
• chairs government meetings
• represents Switzerland abroad
• does not have more power than the rest of the government
This rotating system reflects Swiss political culture: collective leadership and consensus.
Guy Parmelin’s election shows something essential about Switzerland. Here, careers are built through practice, skills and lifelong learning. This is a country where an apprenticeship can lead all the way to the Presidency. A message about the equality of opportunity and the strength of vocational education.
