It’s common for people to dismiss changes in their vision, thinking it’s simply a part of ageing.

Strabismus, or crossed eyes, refers to the misalignment of the eyes and is usually seen in children.

While strabismus can affect one’s appearance, the misalignment of the eyes can also affect the quality of vision.

Over time, untreated strabismus could result in the loss of depth perception and affect peripheral vision, or cause the child to develop lazy eye.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) occurs when the macula or central part of the retina is damaged, commonly caused by ageing.

There are two main types of age-related macular degeneration:

𝗗𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗠𝗗: Usually more common as it accounts for over 80% of cases, and can be managed with good lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements.

𝗪𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗠𝗗: A more advanced form of AMD that requires prompt treatment as leaking blood vessels beneath the retina can cause irreversible vision loss.

As diabetic retinopathy could cause changes to the blood vessels that make them swell or leak fluid, or result in the abnormal growth of new blood vessels on the retina, prompt detection and intervention become all the more important.

With regular eye checks, diabetic retinopathy can be detected early and treated through various means, including laser pan-retinal photocoagulation, focal laser, vitrectomy and eye injections to slow disease progression and protect vision.

When it comes to treating myopia in children, atropine eye drops have been proven to be an effective treatment in controlling myopia progression.

Low-dose atropine eye drops are especially suitable for Asian children, who tend to be at higher risk of developing myopia.

Studies have also shown that low-dose atropine eye drops not only slow down the rate of myopia progression but also carry minimal side effects such as near-blur and glare.
