Strabismus is an eye condition in which abnormalities in the neuromuscular control of eye movement occur, causing the eyes to become misaligned and point in different directions.

It is essential to seek early intervention as when left untreated, strabismus can lead to poor depth perception, side vision, amblyopia (lazy eye) and double vision.

If you or your child displays signs of misaligned eyes or unusual head tilting, be sure to consult with an ophthalmologist for personalised treatment. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, and it accounts for 40% of blindness cases in Singapore.

This condition occurs when fluid gradually builds up in the front of the eye, resulting in increased eye pressure and damage to the optic nerve.

As glaucoma often develops slowly with no noticeable symptoms in the early stages, many may not realise they have the condition until it becomes more advanced. Gradual loss of peripheral vision, or other symptoms such as hazy vision, nausea and severe eye and head pain may also become more prominent over time.

If you are over 40, with a family history of glaucoma, or sense a gradual loss of peripheral vision, schedule an eye screening today. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Beyond the age of 40, changes affecting the eyes can become more common, which impedes vision and puts one at risk for age-related eye conditions.

These age-related eye conditions can present with varying symptoms and affect eyesight differently. If left untreated, certain conditions like glaucoma and cataract can eventually result in irreversible vision loss.

Thatโ€™s why routine eye checks matter. With timely eye screenings, these conditions can be detected and managed early before significant vision damage occurs.

If you are over 40 and experience sudden changes in your vision, consult with an ophthalmologist for prompt medical advice. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Did you know that Singapore is labelled as the "Myopia Capital of the World"? This is because the prevalence of myopia is among the highest in the world, with 65% of children and 83% of young adults being myopic.

This underscores the importance of good lifestyle habits to delay the onset and progression of myopia.

In addition, regular eye checks and appropriate intervention, such as optical devices and atropine eye drops, can also help slow myopia progression.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition arising from damage to the macula or central part of the retina that can blur and distort central vision.

As one of the leading causes of blindness in individuals aged 50 and above, prompt detection and intervention are particularly important in preventing vision loss.

Depending on the severity and type of AMD, different treatment methods are required.

For cases of wet AMD, treatment may involve intravitreal injections to inhibit growth of abnormal blood vessels, photodynamic therapy to reduce leakage and seal abnormal blood vessels, or laser photocoagulation to destroy abnormal blood vessels.

With cases of dry AMD, effective lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements can help slow disease progression and preserve vision.

Should you experience blurred central vision, accompanied by distorted vision, black spots or missing areas in your vision, speak to an ophthalmologist for prompt treatment. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Cataract is a condition where the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, which reduces the amount of light entering the eye and results in symptoms of blurred vision, glare, double vision and colour changes.

While cataracts are not painful or life-threatening, they can impede vision and severely hinder your everyday activities.

The only effective way to treat cataracts is through surgical removal. If the cataract is affecting your daily life, seek prompt medical attention from an ophthalmologist. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

If your child exhibits unusual visual behaviours, such as struggling to recognise faces and objects, liking certain colours or reacting slowly to visual cues, your child may have cerebral visual impairment.

Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is a form of visual dysfunction commonly seen in children that affects visual processing due to damage to the visual centres of the brain.

Most cases of CVI result from damage to the brain occurring before, during or shortly after childbirth.

Other contributing factors that damage the visual areas of the brain, like stroke, brain malformation or infection, and head trauma can also increase one's likelihood of developing CVI.

CVI is best treated early to prevent developmental delays and stimulate visual learning. For prompt assessment and treatment, reach our paediatric eye clinic at ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ today.

Eye conditions are not limited to adults โ€” young children can develop eye problems too. This include common conditions such as amblyopia, myopia, dry eye disease and strabismus.

Children with certain risk factors, including premature birth, Down's syndrome and family history of myopia, may be even more susceptible to developing eye conditions at an earlier age.

Thankfully, early detection and intervention can help to prevent possible irreversible visual damage and ensure healthy visual development.

If you notice signs of frequent squinting, eye rubbing, or difficulty focusing in your child, schedule a detailed eye assessment with our paediatric ophthalmologist. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ
