Programming a power wheelchair is critical for successful outcomes and meeting the demanding needs of the wheelchair user. In this post we are excited to share how easy and intuitive programming is using Permobil’s wireless app based QuickConfig programming. For power wheelchairs that are equipped with Power Platform electronics, QuickConfig programming provides simplified programming for clinicians and equipment providers.

QuickConfig programming is available on all Permobil M & F series Corpus and Corpus VS models. To assist clinicians and equipment providers, QuickConfig features programming guides to help easily customize the power wheelchair for the end user. For example, you can quickly customize memory seating & standing positions with in-app visuals and the ability to grab live seating values from chair. Modifying or setting up a new drive profile for specific terrains or environments is quick, easy, and can be done while your client is using the wheelchair, testing out the programming changes in real time!

Pro-tips for a successful delivery:

Allow the end-user to be an active participant in the delivery process

When saving memory positions, name each of them (eg. Transfer, Van, Grooming, bladder management, pressure relief)

When making programming changes in driving, make one at a time, small changes and allow end-user to try

Remember to recommend follow-up if necessary

Assess end-user satisfaction through outcome measures (QUEST, FMA) to make sure you have met their needs and expectations!

Take the time to help the end user utilize the MyPermobil app so they can be informed on what is happening with their power wheelchair.
This app provides them details on the battery charge, distance traveled, visibility to locations visited, and power seating activity.

The Netti AdaptPro, has been created with a new seatplate with various advantages for long time seating.

It is very easy to sweat in Singapore's humid environment. That's why the perforated surface of the seat plate was designed to create ventilation to counter the humidity. A good microclimate is important in the prevention of pressure ulcers, as damp sweaty skin tends to stick more easily to fabric, creating friction and rubbing. The seat plate is also easy to wipe, so you can clean sweat or spilled Kopi-O with ease!

A seat plate well ensures pressure relief under the sitting bones and helps decrease long-term skin risk and aids sitting stability. Besides having an improved immersion and a 20% lower peak pressure on seating bones as compared to the older model, more pressure has also moved forward - away from the sensitive area around the coccyx and the ischial tuberosities.

As the school year is starting, some parents and children are preparing for the challenges of navigating school in a wheelchair. In a recent episode of Wheelchair Nerds, clinicians Erin Baker, PT, DPT, ATP, CPST, and Stephanie Frazer, MS, OTR/L, CPST, spoke about selecting and maintaining the right mobility device for school, ensuring safe transportation to and from school, and empowering students to fully participate in all aspects of school life, from academics to extracurricular activities.

These are some of the advice the clinicians have proposed in the interview which could prove useful for parents and their children going to school for the first time or transitioning to a different school.

Inclusivity for wheelchair-bound students in schools mean having desks that are adjustable for the student to sit where they can be in the same style or general manner as their peers. The students should be able to access the classroom whiteboard and participate in class activities. These are crucial to a child's social development.

The clinicians advices that parents identify if doorways are wide enough. Whether there stairs and ramps, and generally whether their child can get between classes.

Parents need to look out for wheelchair catered bathrooms, if not they can enquire if an assistant is available for their child's bathroom needs.

And what happens if the unthinkable happens? Can the wheelchair-bound student be able to evacuate or find a safe space in time if disaster - fire, school shooting, tornado and other life-and-death situations - strikes.

Yeah, absolutely. Are they able to access the classroom whiteboard? How are the room configured with the desks? When I think of elementary schools, I imagine a lot of little activity centers or desk pods where kids have to navigate.

For more resources on going back to school check out Mobility Management's article "CRT in the Classroom."

The Permobil F5 Corpus VS power wheelchair transforms into a LEGO Ideas concept

There's a good chance that if you show a LEGO brick to an adult, teenager, or elementary-age child, they'll instantly recognize it. The sight of a single LEGO can evoke fond childhood memories for many people. These iconic toys have a special way of doing that, as play and toys are often associated with joy and fun.
LEGO introduced their first manual wheelchair made from bricks back in 1975, but it wasn't until 1998 that they released a molded form wheelchair, which was included in a medical scene set. Interestingly, Mattel's first Barbie doll in a wheelchair came out just before LEGO's molded form wheelchair in 1997. By the late 1990s, I was already in college, so my days of playing with Barbie and LEGOs were behind me. However, both were still big news in my Recreation Therapy classes, where we were studying the importance of recreation and leisure in development and rehabilitation.

Representation is crucial in all aspects of life, especially during developmental play activities with young children. For children and adults with disabilities, it allows them to play alongside their peers or, in the case of adults, their own children, with a character or doll that looks and experiences life in a make-believe world similar to their own. It also helps reduce the stigma surrounding mobility devices and other assistive technology when children without disabilities have the opportunity to play with toys that include them in their imaginative play activities.

It has been over 25 years since LEGO added the molded form manual wheelchair to their extensive range of pieces, which means it's high time they introduce a power wheelchair option as well.
Enter Anton Danielsson the lead engineer of chassis development at Permobil. In a groundbreaking move, Anton recently submitted the Permobil F5 Corpus VS power wheelchair as a LEGO ideas set. Garnering an impressive 1,980 supporters, his design features all the incredible functionalities of the actual F5 Corpus VS, including vertical standing, anterior and posterior tilt mechanisms, individual suspension on all four wheels, and foldable armrests and footplates.
Inspired by individuals who rely on complex rehab technology (CRT), Anton expresses his admiration for their unwavering determination and problem-solving abilities. Their ability to overcome physical limitations and pursue their dreams is a constant source of inspiration for him.
