Metatarsalgia, or pain in the ball of the foot, is most often caused by increased pressure on the forefoot, leading to inflammation and irritation. Common causes include high-impact activities like running and jumping, improper or high-heeled footwear, being overweight or obese, and foot conditions like arthritis, bunions, stress fractures, or Morton's neuroma. Other factors include age-related loss of the protective fat pad, tight calf muscles, and anatomical foot deformities.
