NTU School of Biological Sciences

NTU School of Biological Sciences Nanyang Technological University, Singapore - School of Biological Sciences The School of Biological Sciences was established in July 2001.

The field of life sciences has been widely acknowledged as the next major technological revolution after the Internet. New knowledge and discoveries generated as a result of genome and molecular biology research will have major impact on the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries, healthcare, food and nutrition, people and the environment. Singapore is already the regional medical and life sc

iences research centre. With our good base of life sciences players, highly skilled and educated workforce, excellent communication systems, good industry infrastructure and a stable government, Singapore has the potential and capability to become a major international medical and life sciences hub. At NTU, we have already made a start in building a capability in the life sciences through our collaboration with the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in the field of biomedical engineering. Besides the liberty to chart new developmental plans outside the organizational structure and constraints of traditional schools of biological sciences and medicine, NTU's technological focus will provide a good basis for developing new technologies and schools in life sciences.

Congratulations to our faculty members! 👏🏻👏🏻

We are proud to share that Assoc. Prof. Linda Zhong and Dr. Hong Yan have been elected as Convenor and Deputy Convenor of Singapore’s National Mirror Working Group (NMWG) for ISO Technical Committee 249 (Traditional Chinese Medicine).

In these leadership roles, they will guide Singapore’s contribution to the development of international TCM standards, supporting safety, quality, and innovation across raw materials, manufactured products, medical devices, and terminology.

Their appointments reflect both academic excellence and national trust, and mark a meaningful step in strengthening Singapore’s voice in global TCM standardisation efforts.

Join us in congratulating them on this achievement! 🌟

The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) was honoured to host Professor Adrian R. Krainer as part of the Lee Kuan Yew Distinguished Visitors Programme last week.

During his visit to SBS on 2 February, Prof. Krainer engaged in a series of academic exchanges, including a welcome and roundtable discussion with SBS management, a tour of SBS facilities, and meetings with research staff and students.

A key highlight was his science talk on 3 February, “The Development of Spinraza, a Disease-Modifying Therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy,” moderated by Assoc. Prof. Xavier Roca, Associate Chair (Research), SBS. In the lecture, Prof. Krainer described how advances in RNA splicing research, the molecular genetics of SMA, and antisense oligonucleotide pharmacology converged to enable the development of nusinersen (Spinraza), the first disease-modifying therapy for SMA, and its transformative impact on patients’ lives.

A 2021 Wolf Prize in Medicine Laureate and pioneer in RNA biology, Prof. Krainer’s visit underscored the power of fundamental research translated into life-changing therapies.

Yet another exciting research achievement to kick-start 2026! 🤩

How do cells know where to build their internal skeleton to move, change shape, and function efficiently?

Researchers from NTU’s School of Biological Sciences (SBS) and School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB), together with collaborators from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), have uncovered how the curvature of a cell’s membrane guides the precise assembly of actin – a key structural protein that enables cell movement and morphogenesis.

👏🏻Congratulations to the SBS researchers Assoc. Prof. Miao Yansong and Dr. Kexin Zhu, and all collaborators on this excellent achievement.💪🏻🌟
