🌟 Low-Dose Radiotherapy: A Game Changer for Osteoarthritis Pain? 🌟

Did you know that low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) is being used in Europe as a non-invasive treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) pain? 🔬💡

✅ How does it work?
LDRT (0.3–1.0 Gy per session, total 3–6 Gy) helps reduce inflammation and relieve pain, especially in weight-bearing joints like the knees, hips, and hands.

✅ Is it effective?
Studies show 50–80% of patients experience long-term pain relief, with minimal side effects. It’s an alternative for those who can’t have surgery or don’t respond to medications.

🚀 While LDRT isn’t widely used outside Europe, more research is underway to bring this innovative treatment to more patients!

We are proud to introduce our new radiation oncologist, Dr Looi Wen Shen. He is currently a Consultant at Proton Therapy SG, a Visiting Consultant at KKH and NCCS, and Clinical Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS. Dr Looi Wen Shen graduated from National University Singapore (YLL-SOM) in 2008 and completed his specialist training at National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). Dr Looi also practised at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, USA, where he completed formal subspecialty fellowship training in adult and paediatric proton therapy. Subsequently, he kick-started the paediatric proton therapy program at NCCS. Dr Looi is also the only radiation oncologist who is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) in Singapore. He also received further training at the Taipei Medical University Hospital Proton Centre for regionally endemic diseases such as liver cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer. His interests are in prostate / paediatric / sarcoma / head and neck / brain and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). For inquiries, please email frontdesk@proton.sg
