My first trip out of the house in the New Year was to the hospital for my radiation therapy (RT). What a gloomy, raining day! Last week, the speech therapist taught me swallowing exercises. I did not know that swallowing is a complicated process involving some 30 muscles, many bone structures and nerves. RT to the head and neck can cause difficulty in swallowing and result in aspiration. Three times a day, 20 minutes per exercise session. It is like gym work for the throat. I take the prophylactic swallowing exercises seriously, and hope for the best outcome. So far so good. Touch wood. --- gct
