St Luke's Hospital - SLH

St Luke's Hospital - SLH A charity healthcare provider enriching lives in the communities since 1996 through clinical, social, and pastoral care.

St Luke’s Hospital, named after the patron saint of the medical profession, was the first hospital in Singapore dedicated to the care of older persons.

Today, we are a community care provider supporting needs through our care ecosystem, spanning inpatient, outpatient, home care and community-based programmes, and specialised areas of care in rehabilitation, dementia, wound and palliative care.
An Institution of a Public Character, we care for 2,500 inpatients and 5,000 outpatients each year, regardless of race, language or religion. Through our Clinical, Social, Pastoral (CSP) care model, we transform lives holistically beyond physical health.

Impactful and innovative in transforming community care, we were the first recipient of the President’s Award for Social Impact (2012), and the first community hospital to receive the National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Medal (National University Hospital – St Luke’s Hospital Integrated Care Path, 2016).

We partnered the National University Health System (NUHS) to pioneer the Patient Appointment Consolidation (PAC) programme, which won the overall Excellence Champion Medal in the National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Medals in 2017. In 2022, we were also awarded with the National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Medal for the Community Response Team (CRT) project, and a joint-hospital Improving Mobility Via Exoskeletons (IMOVE) programme.

Through our concerted efforts to build a thriving workplace, we received the Great Place To Work® certification in 2023, a global standard for quantifying and benchmarking employee experience.

Can you guess if a curry puff is “easy to chew”? 🤔

In celebration of Speech Therapy Day, our Speech Therapists set up an interactive booth on modified texture diets and thickened drinks — showing how everyday foods can be adjusted for patients with dysphagia (swallowing difficulties).

Through hands-on activities, staff learnt about the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) Framework, which guides safe preparation of food and drinks to prevent choking and aspiration. Some also tried transforming curry puffs and cakes into texture-modified versions, and sampled thickened water!

This experience reminded us that a modified diet does not mean giving up your favourite foods — and deepened our appreciation for our Speech Therapists, who help patients eat and drink safely without compromising taste.

Mr Tan Beng Siong, 54, has lived most of his life on his own terms - from his early days earning a living at a slaughterhouse, to the life-changing fall from his sixth-floor flat that left him with limited mobility.

In May 2024, “undetectable bowel movements” led to severe ulcerations in his legs and even the loss of a limb. He was subsequently diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer, which kept him in hospital longer than expected.

During this difficult time, Mr Tan found compassionate care at St Luke’s Hospital.

Here, the nurses and doctors treated him with respect and kindness, while his medical social worker helped him secure financial aid and supported him as he struggled with the emotional weight of his diagnosis.

We are proud of our Music Therapists Dr Tan Xueli, Karen Koh, and Camellia Soon, and Art Therapist Lee Sze-Chin, who represented St Luke’s Hospital at Singapore’s first-ever Creative Arts Therapies Symposium this month! 🎨🎶

Co-organised by the Art Therapists' Association Singapore and Association for Music Therapy Singapore, with education partner LASALLE College of the Arts, this milestone event brought together more than 240 participants — including therapists, doctors, allied health professionals, and members of the public.

Our team shared insightful presentations on the use of generative AI in art therapy, music therapy for speech recovery after stroke, and the role of music therapy in relational meaning-making in palliative care. They also joined a panel discussion on the future of creative arts therapies in Singapore.

We are inspired to continue championing creative arts therapies — harnessing the healing power of music and art to bring hope, wellness, and wholeness to those we serve. 💙

Our team recently joined hands with People's Association , Bukit Batok Healthcare Taskforce and Bukit Batok Zone 5 RN for the inaugural Bukit Batok Huncle (Healthy Uncles) Initiative @ 155 Foodhub!

From health screenings, exercise demos to meaningful conversations over kopi, the morning was all about meeting our “uncles” where they are — in familiar community spaces — and empowering them to take charge of their health in simple, practical ways.

Beyond addressing the usual “3-Highs”, our team integrated mental health screening and leveraged innovations such as the Opsis AI-enabled app and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to spark meaningful motivational conversations. Participants also enjoyed specially curated health bites and a short wellness workout delivered by our healthcare team.

This initiative marks a key step in advancing a population health approach that brings care upstream and into everyday life. A big thank-you to our partners, volunteers from House of Anatole and Singapore Baptist Church, and our dedicated team for making this meaningful effort possible!

Our Speech Therapy team — Lead, Speech Therapy Goh Huai Zhi and Speech Therapist Rebekah Ang — proudly represented Singapore and St Luke’s Hospital at the Asia IDDSI Conference 2025, a regional platform dedicated to advancing safe and inclusive nutrition for individuals with swallowing difficulties.

The team shared SLH’s journey in implementing the International Dysphasia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI), reflecting our commitment to evidence-based and person-centred care. They also gained valuable insights from regional innovations — from Hong Kong’s restaurant-integrated modified menus to locally flavoured pureed diets from Thailand, Taiwan, and Japan.

The conference further strengthened our connections with delegates, vendors and local representatives, paving the way for future collaborations in clinical practice and innovation.

The knowledge and partnerships gained will continue to guide our efforts in enhancing dysphagia care in Singapore, as we work to raise standards and ensure safe, dignified nutrition for all we serve.

This Quality and Innovation Day, we celebrated our shared commitment to building a culture of safety in infection control — a cornerstone of quality care at St Luke’s Hospital.

It was a day of inspiration and learning as staff came together to honour teams driving excellence in patient care, sparking collaboration across departments. 💙

Highlights included the launch of the SLH Innovation Board, a lively Hand Hygiene performance, and the recognition of Ward 2C as the CAUTI-Free Ward for achieving the lowest incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

Four projects were recognised under the Best Quality Improvement and Productivity Improvement categories, covering topics such as Safer Catheter Care, Group-Based Rehabilitation for Total Knee Replacement Inpatients, Doctor Rostering Efficiency, and Height Measurement for Immobile Patients.

We were honoured to have Prof Paul Anantharajah Tambyah, Senior Consultant at the Division of Infectious Diseases, National University Hospital - NUH, and Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, share insights on “Strengthening Surveillance: From Acute Discharge to Community Monitoring”.

👏 Congratulations to all award winners and project teams for your dedication to innovation and continuous improvement — truly embodying our commitment to holistic excellence in care.

Our team was proud to represent St Luke’s Hospital at the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Singapore Health & Biomedical Congress — a vital platform where healthcare professionals gather to share ideas and drive advancements that shape the future of care in Singapore.

Led by Senior Nurse Manager Emily Ng, Nurse Manager Fiona Chee, Lead Speech Therapist Goh Huai Zhi, Senior Staff Nurses Melvin Lau and Rodney Pagdilao, and Senior Clinical Educator Dr Anqi Su, the team showcased their interdepartmental “Thickener Project” — a collaboration between Nursing and Rehabilitation to enhance how thickened fluids are prepared for patients with swallowing difficulties.

Over six months, the team worked to identify a faster, safer, and more consistent method of preparing thickeners — improving nursing and speech therapy efficiency, as well as patient safety under the EatSafe SG initiative.

This project also empowers caregivers to safely and confidently prepare thickeners at home, supporting hydration, comfort, and dignity for patients with dysphagia.

A testament to collaboration, innovation, and compassion — transforming care, one initiative at a time.

Our Story

St Luke's Hospital, named after the patron saint of the medical profession, was the first hospital in Singapore dedicated to the elderly sick.

We have expanded our services beyond the elderly to enrich more lives. An Institution of a Public Character, we care for 2,000 inpatients and 3,000 outpatients each year, regardless of race, language or religion. As illnesses may be long and chronic, we care holistically for patients' physical, emotional and psychosocial well-being.

Impactful and innovative in transforming community care, we were the first recipient of the President's Award for Social Impact (2012), and the first community hospital to receive the National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Medal (National University Hospital - St Luke's Hospital Integrated Care Path, 2016). We topped the Community Hospital Patient Experience Survey in 2018.
