The Heart and Vascular Centre offers specialized care and treatment for various heart and vascular conditions. It is headed by Adjunct Associate Professor and Senior Consultant Cardiologist Dr Paul TL Chiam, who specializes in General Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. We offer a range of specialized cardiac diagnostic tests and treatments for various cardiac and vascular conditions, includ

ing:

Electrocardiography (ECG), 24Hr ECG monitoring (Holter), 24Hr BP monitoring, Treadmill Stress Testing, Echocardiogram, Angiogram, Angioplasty and Valvuloplasty. Dr Paul TL Chiam has also accumulated much experience in the transcatheter valve implantation procedure, being the one who led the team which performed the first Transcather Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) or implantation (TAVI) in Asia in 2009. TAVI is a minimally invasive procedure that repairs the old and damaged valve, without requiring an open heart surgery. This presents another option, especially for patients who are unable to tolerate open heart surgeries which are of higher risks.

Two days ago, Dr Paul Chiam (The Heart & Vascular Centre interventional cardiologist) and Dr Ong Cheng Kang (Mount Elizabeth Hospital neuroradiologist), successfully performed their 15th case of carotid artery angioplasty/ stent procedure together.
Carotid artery stenting is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed under local anaesthesia to open and re-establish blood flow in significantly narrowed carotid arteries, in patients who have suffered transient strokes or minor strokes, so that further strokes can be prevented.
We are happy to report that the patient was discharged after a 1-night stay and all our previous patients are doing well. We couldn't have done it without the support of our dedicated Mount Elizabeth Hospital cath lab team of nurses, technicians and radiographers! Looking forward to helping more patients in the future!

Yesterday, our doctors (Paul Chiam, Kelvin Chua, Lim Choon Pin) of The Heart and Vascular Centre successfully performed a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (TAVI - transcatheter aortic valve implantation) using the newly launched Edwards Lifesciences ‘Sapien 3 Ultra Resilia’ valve, to treat a patient with severe aortic valve stenosis. Our patient has since been discharged today.
The Sapien 3 Ultra Resilia valve has been shown to produce better hemodynamics (blood flow dynamics) and more importantly, has an astounding 99.3% freedom from valve degeneration at 8 years.
This was the first use of the Sapien 3 Ultra Resilia valve in Southeast Asia, and we could not have done it without the support of our cardiac anesthetist, Dr Suelyn Chew Sook Leung, the Edwards Lifesciences team, and our dedicated Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital cath lab team of nurses, cardiac technologists and radiographers!
Excited and looking forward to helping more patients in the future with this cutting-edge technology.

Yesterday, The Heart and Vascular Centre (Drs Paul Chiam and Lim Choon Pin) teamed up with our cardiology friends Dr Ing Haan Lim and Dr Joshua Loh (missed a photo op with him) and successfully treated another two patients with the PASCAL Mitral TEER device! This is an innovative technology for the minimally invasive treatment of mitral regurgitation through a small incision at the artery at the groin, without the need for open heart surgery.
Ever grateful to our trusted anaesthetist Dr Ving Yuen See Tho for keeping patients comfortable and stable throughout the procedure. And of course, the team from Edwards Lifesciences for their support and the guidance of expert proctor Dr Cara Barnes for her neat tips! And all these couldn't have been possible without the excellent cath lab nurses, radiographers and techs at Mount Elizabeth Hospital!

One month ago, Drs Paul Chiam and Lim Choon Pin from The Heart and Vascular Centre successfully performed two cases of minimally invasive transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) using the Edwards Lifesciences PASCAL Device to treat our patients with severe mitral regurgitation.
These were the first cases using this innovative device in private hospitals in Singapore, and only the second centre - after the National Heart Centre of Singapore - outside of Japan to have access to this cutting-edge technology which has features that increase procedural safety.
We are happy to report that our patients are doing well, and we are looking forward to helping more patients in the future!

We are proud to have successfully performed our first Renal Denervation procedure! This is a procedure that utilizes a minimally invasive catheter-based approach to deliver energy around the blood vessels leading into kidney to reduce the nerve activity, in a bid to lower the blood pressure in an individual. This will extend our portfolio of care to patients with resistant hypertension.

We are privileged to be part of the launch of the new implantable loop recorder (ILR) - Biotronik Biomonitor IV. With extended longevity, enhanced detection and algorithms equipped with artificial intelligence to discriminate critical rhythms, we will be able to provide better care to our patients.

An implantable loop recorder is a device that is implanted under the skin on the chest that records the heartbeat continuously for up to 3-5 years. It's also called a cardiac event recorder. The device tells your care provider how the heart is beating while you do your daily activities. It is especially crucial for patients who have episodic palpitations and fainting spells suspectedly due to abnormal rhythms but not caught on traditional external devices such as a Holter rhythm monitor.

Our patient who did TAVI 10 years ago and still going strong 👍

Transcatheter Aortic Valve implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure that treats severe aortic stenosis. Aortic valve stenosis occurs when the opening of the aortic valve becomes narrowed, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest discomfort. Unlike conventional surgical valve replacement, TAVI does not need the chest to be cracked open and it can be performed on a beating heart, making it an attractive option -

The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) is an implantable medical device placed just outside the rib cage that provides protection from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) yet leaving the heart and blood vessels untouched. This eliminates the potential for blood vessel injury, reduces the risk of systemic infection and avoids the complications of traditional leads that are placed inside the heart.

Dr Kelvin Chua successfully performed this procedure at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital on 2 patients with genetic heart disease. Thanks to a great team at the Cardiovascular Laboratory and support from Boston Scientific making this possible.

Our Story

The Heart and Vascular Centre offers specialized care and treatment for various heart and vascular conditions.

It is headed by Adjunct Associate Professor and Senior Consultant Cardiologist Dr Paul TL Chiam, who specializes in General Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology, including minimally valve repair procedures, coronary, carotid and leg artery stenting (angioplasty).

Dr Lim Choon Pin, our co-director, specializes in General Cardiology, Advanced Cardiac Imaging (Echocardiography), Heart Failure management including heart transplants, LVAD (heart assist device/heart pumps). We offer a range of specialized cardiac diagnostic tests and treatments for various cardiac and vascular conditions, including: Electrocardiography (ECG), 24Hr ECG monitoring (Holter), 24Hr BP monitoring, Treadmill Stress Testing, Echocardiogram, Angiogram, Angioplasty and Valvuloplasty. This presents another option, especially for patients who are unable to tolerate open heart surgeries which are of higher risks.

Dr Lim Choon Pin was one of the key leaders in the National Heart Centre Singapore Heart Failure management team, before he joined Dr Chiam in our centre. He also played a strong teaching role as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at DukeNUS and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
